MADISON, Wisc. - No. 2 Wisconsin (25-4-1/20-3-1) clinched its first-ever WCHA regular season title with its 3-1 win Saturday against visiting No. 5 Minnesota (20-9-1/15-8-1). Wisconsin, which currently has 41 points on the season, becomes just the third team in league history to claim the regular season title. Minnesota has four to its credit while Minnesota Duluth has won the regular season crown twice.
Friday, Minnesota handed Wisconsin a 3-1 loss, marking the first time all season the Badgers have lost two games in a row. But Wisconsin rallied Saturday to win 3-1, clinching the title and giving head coach Mark Johnson his 100th career victory.
St. Cloud State (15-14-1/12-11-1), who was ranked in the USCHO.com poll for the first time in the program's history, posted a road sweep at Minnesota State (11-16-3/8-14-2). The Huskies' edged the Mavericks 1-0 Friday and the recorded a 6-1 win Saturday. Bemidji State (10-20-2/9-17-0) recorded its second straight series sweep as the Beavers posted two one goal wins at Ohio State (11-14-5/8-13-3). Friday the Beavers posted a 2-1 win and the completed the sweep with a 5-4 victory Saturday. N0. 4 Minnesota Duluth (19-7-2/17-7-2) and North Dakota (7-21-2/3-19-2) split their weekend series as the Bulldogs won 8-0 Friday and then North Dakota recorded a 2-0 victory Saturday.
Minnesota Duluth is in second place in the standings with 36 points followed by Minnesota in third with 31. St. Cloud State has moved into fourth place with 25 points while Ohio State is fifth with 19 and Minnesota State and Bemidji State are tied for sixth with 18 points. North Dakota rounds out the standings with eight points.
The teams will continue to jockey for position as Minnesota plays a home-and-home series with St. Cloud State, Minnesota State travels to Wisconsin and Ohio State is at North Dakota. Minnesota Duluth and Bemidji State are off.

BEMIDJI STATE BEAVERS
Bemidji State traveled to Columbus, Ohio this past weekend to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes at the OSU Ice Rink. Bemidji State was able to come away with its second weekend series sweep of the season and its second series sweep in a row. On Friday evening Bemidji State had to score two unanswered goals to come away with a 2-1 victory. On Saturday the Beavers were able to hold off the Buckeyes to complete the weekend sweep with a 5-4 victory. On Friday evening Ohio State came out and controlled the first period of play out-shooting the Beavers 12-to-9 in the period and recording a first period goal just :46 into the period. At the end of one period of play OSU lead 1-0. Bemidji State fought back and tied the contest up at 1-1 in the second period on Tara Hiscock's (Bemidji, Minn.) 10th goal of the season for the Beavers. Picking up the helpers on the goal were Jenn Sadler (Pickering, Ontario) and Kate Robinson (Shanty Bay, Ontario). The two teams would skate even for most of the third period until Bemidji State tookadvantage of the power-play opportunity and score the game-winning goal at 18:40 of the period. Scoring the game-winning goal was Helena Tageson (Malmo, Sweden) her second game-winning goal of her career and her sixth power-play goal of the season...Recording the win for the Beavers was Jill Luebke (Neenah, Wis.) her fifth win of the season and her second win in a row for the Beavers. Luebke stopped 28 shots in the game for the Beavers. In Saturday's contest the Beavers would be the team to garner the first period lead as Jessica Pullar (Elk River, Minn.) put the Beavers up 1-0 at 8:55 of the first period. Assisting on the goal was Nina Ziegenhals (Sankt Augustin, Germany). In the second period Ohio State scored two unanswered goals to take a 2-1 lead but Bemidji State's Kelly Hart (Ajax, Ontario) tied the contest back up on her sixth goal of the season. Assisting on Hart's goal were Tara Hiscock (Bemidji, Minn.) and Haley Balcom (Elk River, Minn.). In the third period of play Bemidji State scored two goals to go ahead 4-2. Helena Tageson (Malmo, Sweden) picked up her tenth goal of the season and her second goal of the weekend to put the Beavers up 3-2. Nikki Eckebrecht (Hamilton, Ontario) added to the Beavers lead at 7:12 to give the Beavers a 4-2 lead. Ohio State got the score with-in 4-3 but Kelly Hart (Ajax, Ontario) spoiled Ohio State's comeback as she scored her second goal of the contest with six-minutes left in regulation to give the Beavers a 5-3 lead. Hart's goals ended up being the game-winning goal for the Beavers. Ohio State added a goal with :18 left to play but the Beavers completed the weekend series sweep with the 5-4 victory. Jill Luebke (Neenah, Wis.) picked up the win for the Beavers recording 32 saves in the victory. Luebke improved her record to 6-9-1 on the season and is currently on a three game-winning streak for the Beavers. This is the longest winning-streak Luebke has attained in her career. Bemidji State is idle next weekend. The Beavers will be in action again on the weekend of Feb.24-25 when the Beavers host St. Cloud State at the John Glas Fieldhouse. Earlier this season the Beavers were swept by the Huskies in St. Cloud, Minn. Bemidji State is currently 12-15-4 all-time versus the Huskies and 7-5-2 at the John Glas Fieldhouse versus the Huskies. On Friday Feb. 24 the game is slated to start at 7:07 pm while on Saturday Feb. 25 the puck is slated to drop at 2:07 pm.
MINNESOTA GOLDEN GOPHERS
No. 5 Minnesota earned a series split over No. 2 and WCHA leader, Wisconsin over the weekend. Minnesota was victorious Friday night, winning, 3-1, over the Badgers, while dropping a 3-1 contest the following night. In the Minnesota win, the Gophers scored a goal in each period of play to win their 20th game of the season. Since the inception of the program in the 1997-98 season, Minnesota has now had over 20 wins in every year. The Gophers held the school record for wins last year, earning a 36-2-2 record. Minnesota had scoring from all three lines in the win on Saturday. Krista Johnson got the Gophers off to an early 1-0 lead at 11:08 in the first when she scored her third goal of the season. Linemates Liz Palkie and Becky Wacker contributed on the goal and earned the assists. Gigi Marvin netted the eventual gamewinner when she batted in her 10th goal of the season at 16:04 of the second period. All three players on the line (McKenzie, Philipczyk and Marvin) all had a shot on goal, but Marvin was there to bat in the final shot to put the Gophers up, 2-0. The Badgers ended their scoreless streak when Minnesota was called with a penalty and they pulled goalie Meghan Horras to add the extra attacker. It took a six-on-four opportunity before the Badgers put a goal past freshman goalie Kim Hanlon at 19:34. Minnesota, however, responded when they scored :10 later at 19:44 by an unassisted effort from alternate captain Bobbi Ross. I t was Ross' 15th goal on the season. Hanlon improved her overall record to 8-2-0 overall. With Krista Johnson's goal, the Gophers are now 16-2-0 when scoring first. When entering the third period with the lead, Minnesota holds an 18-1-0 record....In the second game, Minnesota and Wisconsin went scoreless in the first period of play before Wisconsin scored at 5:08 of the second period. The Badgers added to their lead when Jinelle Zaugg scored at 16:25, also in the second period. Minnesota cut the Badger lead to one when Erica McKenzie scored her 19th goal of the season on a power-play goal, her sixth of the season. However, Wisconsin added the insurance goal at 8:46 of the third for a 3-1 win. Although Brittony Chartier had a career-high 36 saves, she fell in the contest and dropped to a 12-7-1 record...Minnesota will compete in a home-and-home series against No. 10 St. Cloud State next weekend, Feb. 17-18. Friday's game is slated for a 7 p.m. start at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. Saturday's game will be played at 4 p.m. at Ridder Arena. Both games will have live audio available on www.gophersports.com. Minnesota holds the third-place mark in the WCHA standings with 31 points, while SCSU is fourth with 25 points.
MINNESOTA DULUTH BULLDOGS
The No. 4 Bulldogs earned a split with North Dakota with an 8-0 victory and a 0-2 loss...The eight goals on Friday were a season high for UMD and its highest mark since Jan. 7, 2005 versus Ohio State. The 2-0 loss on Saturday as the first ever loss to North Dakota in team history and only the second time this season that the Bulldogs have failed to tally at least one goal...This was only the ninth time that UMD has been shutout by an opponent...On Wednesday, Feb. 8 the team had new leadership announced as junior G Riitta Schaublin and senior D Krista McArthur were named team captains, while junior F Noemie Marin held her assistant captain job and junior D Jill Sales was named to the position...In her first game as a captain, Schaublin earned her 12th career shutout and her third of the 2005-06 season as she stopped all 19 shots that came her direction on Friday. Freshman F Tawni Mattila earned the first two goals of the game on Friday just 1:29 apart. Rookie D Myriam Trepanier also scored twice for the Bulldogs in the game recorded her first collegiate goal. Marin rounded out the two-goal scorers for UMD. Sophomore F Karine Demeule scored her first goal of the season on Friday and only her second point...A total of 11 players recorded a point in Friday's game, including seven with multiple points. Mattila and Trepanier's multiple-goal games are the first of their careers...Prior to the start of the Saturday game, the Bulldogs and the WCHA honored five members of the UMD roster as WCHA Scholar Athletes. To qualify players had to be at least a sophomore and have a 3.5 GPA. Juniors Rachael Bertram, Jessica Koizumi, Noemie Marin, Riitta Schaublin, and Suvi Vacker were honored for their academic achievements. Then following the game UMD honored the 2006 senior class, as Krista McArthur and Larissa Luther played their last regular season home games at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center...The Bulldogs, now 19-7-2 overall and 17-7-2 in the league, have recorded their second highest number of losses in a season. The highest number is 12 back in the 2003-04 season...UMD will be off next week before returning to action on Feb. 24-25 at Minnesota State...The Bulldogs are being represented by 11 different players at the 2006 Winter Olympics, the most of any school in the nation. The next highest number of representatives is six from Dartmouth University. The 11 Olympic team members play for seven of the eight women's hockey teams in the tournament. The only team not represented in Italy. Current freshman F Mari Pehkonen (Finland) scored the first goal of the XX Winter Olympic games during Finland's 3-0 victory over Germany (Michaela Lanzl). Former UMD standout Caroline Ouellette has been strong for Team Canada, tallying a hat-trick in the first period in the teams 16-0 win over Team Italy. The hat-trick was the fastest recorded in women's Olympic history.
MINNESOTA STATE MAVERICKS
Minnesota State fell twice at home to St. Cloud State in a series that had a huge effect on the league standings. The Huskies eked out a 1-0 win on Friday with a first-period goal and rolled to a 6-1 win Saturday. With the WCHA losses, the Mavericks now occupy a share of sixth place in the league with Bemidji State and hold a record of 11-16-3, 8-14-2 in conference play...Maverick netminder Laura Brennan had a solid night in goal Friday but a first-period goal by St. Cloud State proved to be the game-winner. Brennan stopped 23 shots and helped hold the WCHA's best power-play unit scorless on three chances. In fact, that power-play was held without a shot on goal...The Husky power-play broke throught the Maverick defense the following afternoon, getting three goals on the advantage. St. Cloud State opened the scoring with a power-play marker in the first and added two more in the span of under three minutes in the second. Minnesota State avoided the series shutout when freshman Maggie Fisher stole the puck from a SCSU defender and raced solo to the net for her team-best 15th goal of the season. Brit Kehler took the loss in net, bringing her record to 10-10-2 on the season...With her 15th goal of the season, Fisher moved into a share of fourth place on the MSU single-season charts. She shares that position with Tristin Stephenson who scored 15 in 1999-00. Stephenson also has MSU's career scoring record with 67 points...Kehler, by stopping 23 shots, improved her season total to 648. That is good for fifth on MSU's single-season chart. Next up is Shari Vogt's total of 792 in 2000-01...The Mavericks will look to break the tie with Bemidji State and clear up their playoff picture by heading to Madison to take on second-ranked Wisconsin at the Kohl Center. Game time is 7:07 p.m. both Friday and Saturday.
NORTH DAKOTA FIGHTING SIOUX
The Fighting Sioux women's hockey team snapped a four game losing skid as they upended No. 4 Minnesota Duluth 2-0 Saturday night at the DECC...Friday night the Sioux lost 8-0...Saturday's win against Minnesota Duluth marked the Fighting Sioux's first ever win against the Bulldogs...The Sioux used two power play goals and a perfect penalty-killing unit that killed off 10 attempts and a shut out from Margaret-Ann Hinkley in the win...UND was out shot in the game 21-25 but Hinkley was perfect and improved her record to 2-9-0 on the year...Randi Motsko and Devon Fingland scored power play goals for the Fighting Sioux...With the win the Sioux improved their overall record to 7-21-2 and go to 3-19-2 in the WCHA...The Fighting Sioux will host the Ohio State Buckeyes next Saturday and Sunday in Grand Forks, N.D...The Bemidji State Beavers swept Ohio State last weekend in Ohio beating them 2-1 and 5-4...This weekend will be the last home games for 10 Fighting Sioux players...Game times are Saturday, Feb. 18 at 2:07 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 19 at 12:07 p.m.
OHIO STATE BUCKEYES
Ohio State dropped a pair of one-goal games in a two-game WCHA series against Bemidji State Feb. 10-11 at OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes fell 2-1 Friday and 5-4 Saturday...The two losses were just the second time in 14 series that Bemidji State has won both games against Ohio State...The loss Friday was the first of the season for the Buckeyes when leading after the opening period. OSU scored 46 seconds into the first period for a 1-0 lead, but the Beavers answered with a goal in each of the following two periods for the win. Ohio State is now 5-1-1 when leading after the first period...The losses were the first for the Buckeyes this season when tied after two periods. The teams were tied 1-1 Friday after two periods and 2-2 Saturday. OSU is now 4-2-4 when tied after two periods...Freshman goaltender Liana Bonanno made 40 saves Saturday for her second game this season with 40 or more saves. It was also the eighth time in 11 appearances that she has made 30 or more saves...Senior co-captain Jana Harrigan had two assists in the Saturday game to increase her team-leading point total to 41. It is the fourth-highest single-season point total in OSU history. Her 21 assists are the fifth-most in a single season...Sophomore Erin Keys scored a goal in each game to increase her goal total to nine and point total to 14...Junior Amber Bowman scored her 10th goal of the year Saturday to become the second Buckeye will double-digit goals. It was also her sixth goal on the power play and her team-leading 14th point overall with the man-advantage...Freshman Hayley Klassen had a goal and an assist Saturday for 12 points this season to tie for the lead in rookie points...The Buckeyes next play in their last regular-season road series when they travel to Grand Forks, N.D., to face the Fighting Sioux Feb. 18-19. Ohio State will then conclude its 2005-06 regular-season schedule Feb. 24-25 against Wisconsin at OSU Ice Rink.
ST. CLOUD STATE HUSKIES
A season of "firsts", the SCSU women's hockey team continues to etch itself in the Husky record books. The Huskies swept Minnesota State in the Feb. 10-11 weekend series, collecting four crucial points in the WCHA and extending its fourth place lead to six points over fifth place Ohio State...Led by junior goaltender Lauri St. Jacques (Sturgeon Falls, Ont.), the St. Cloud State women's hockey team (14-14-1, 11-11-1 WCHA) improved to .500 on the season with a 1-0 shutout victory of the Minnesota State Mavericks in conference play on Saturday, Feb. 11. For the first time in six seasons, the Huskies are better than .500 on the season. The last time SCSU bettered a .500 mark was in 2000-2001 when the Huskies notched a 17-16-2 overall record and a 12-10-2 WCHA record...On Friday, Feb. 10, the Huskies earned their second consecutive shutout after defeating Minnesota State 1-0 in the All Seasons Arena. Junior assistant captain and forward Denelle Maguet (St. Rose, Manitoba) notched the game-winning goal at the 3:50 mark of the first period, which marked her 11th goal of the season, was assisted junior forward Hailey Clarkson (13-18-31). The next two periods, though held scoreless, were a battle. Both team's penalty kills were 100%, as SCSU went 0-for-3 and MSU went 0-for-4 in the contest. The Huskies achieved the slight advantage by out-shooting the Mavericks 24-22 in the game...MSU's junior goaltender Laura Brennan notched the third star of the game as she collected 23 saves on the night in 60:00 minutes of play. SCSU's St. Jacques, who backstopped the Huskies to their second consecutive shutout with 22 saves on the night, improved her season record to 8-9-1. Of note, this marks the first time in St. Jacques' collegiate career that she has marked back-to-back shutouts...On Saturday, Feb. 11, the Huskies completed the weekend sweep and gained two more crucial points in the WCHA with a 6-1 victory over the Mavericks...Freshman forward Megan McCarthy (Eden Prairie) helped boost the Huskies to a 1-0 lead at 14:34 in the first period with a power play goal in the crease. Senior forwards Kristy Oonincx (Moose Jaw, Sask.) and Ashley Stewart (Toronto, Ont.) collected the assists on the lone goal of the period. The Huskies' power play exploded in the second period, connecting on two of three power play opportunities to extend their lead to 4-0 going into the second intermission. SCSU's second power play goal of the game came from Ashley Stewart as she connected on a one-timer in the slot from junior forward Hailey Clarkson (Winnepegosis, Manitoba) and Oonincx. Ashley Stewart's goal marked her 92nd career point. Just eight points away from 100 career points, Ashley Stewart looks to become just the second women's hockey player to joint the prestigious 100-point club. Former Husky Roxy Stang is the lone Husky to score over 100 career points as she notched 119 from 2001-2004....Junior assistant captain Denelle Maguet (St. Rose, Manitoba) tallied SCSU's third power play goal at the 14:32 mark of the second period. The goal marked Maguet's 12th goal of the season as sophomore defender Brittni Kuyper (Eden Pairie) and junior Hailey Clarkson earned assists on the goal. Just over a minute later, SCSU's sophomore forward Marie-Michel Lemieux (Boisbrand, Quebec) found the back of the net with a transition goal at the 15:45 mark of the second period. Senior forward Rachel Solgon (Tucson, AZ) tallied the assist on the goal, which marked her second assist of her career. SCSU did not let up heading into the third period. Team assistant captain Denelle Maguet and senior Kristy Oonincx set up teammate Hailey Clarkson to tally the fifth goal of the game for the Huskies at the 4:18 mark of the period. Minnesota State got on the scoreboard for the first time all weekend with a four-on-four goal at 15:40 from Maggie Fisher. SCSU answered with a goal of its own at 15:50 from Kuyper. The goal marked Kuyper's third goal of her career as freshman Brita Schroeder (Big Lake) and sophomore Laura Fast (Calgary, Alberta) earned the assists on the goal...In goal, St. Jacques led the Huskies with 26 saves as she improved her season record to 9-9-1 overall. Of note, this marks the first time in St. Jacques' collegiate career that she has been .500 at this point in the season. After collecting 184 saves in the last six games, and giving up just four goals in the last six games, St. Jacques has helped lead her team to its most series sweeps in a season with six. In 2000-2001, the SCSU amassed five series sweeps...Kristy Oonincx led the Huskies with three assists, earning the playmaker award of the game. Ashley Stewart collected two points, leaving her just eight points shy of the 100-point mark. Hailey Clarkson also collected three points with one goal and two assists. SCSU's head coach Jason Lesteberg notched his 67th career victory on Saturday, Feb. 11...The Huskies scored first in both games this weekend are are 14-3-1 after scoring first. SCSU out-shot MSU just 29-27...St. Cloud State, who now has a six point lead over fifth place Ohio State in the WCHA, will prepare for the Minnesota Gophers for a home-and-home weekend series on Feb. 17-18. SCSU's five seniors; Randie Jelinski, Kristy Oonincx, Rachel Solgon, Ashley Stewart and Kelly Stewart, will be honored on Friday, Feb. 17 for a senior night presentation at the National Hockey Center.
WISCONSIN BADGERS
No. 2 Wisconsin clinched its first-ever regular season WCHA title following a 3-1 victory over Minnesota...The title became official after Minnesota Duluth suffered an upset conference loss...Saturday's win also gave Badger head coach Mark Johnson his 100th career win in his fourth season at the helm for UW...Wisconsin improved to 25-4-1 overall and 20-3-1 in the WCHA...The Gophers claimed the first game of the series with a 3-1 score...Saturday, an even first period ended scoreless with Wisconsin taking just two more shots than Minnesota, 11-9...The Badgers produced at 5:08 in the second on a power-play drive...Senior captain Sharon Cole (Bloomington, Minn.) and points-leader Sara Bauer (St. Catharines, Ontario) assisted on the goal by defender Bobbi-Jo Slusar (Swift Current, Saskatchewan)...With only 3:35 remaining on the clock in the second, Wisconsin scored the eventual game-winner after a deflected shot by Jinelle Zaugg was returned to her for a second opportunity...The Gophers prevented the shutout when they responded on the power play with a goal from Erika McKenzie...The Badgers added insurance to their win at 8:46 in the final period. Slusar slammed the puck through traffic from the blue line and Cole tipped in the goal...Rookie Badger goalie Jessie Vetter collected a 24 saves in the game, improving to 4-1-0...Friday, the Badger loss marked the first back-to-back losses for the team this season...Despite outshooting their opponent in the first period 13-10, 9-3 in power play shots, the Badgers headed to the locker rooms down 0-1...Entering the second period, Wisconsin was persistent, but the Badgers remained scoreless for the entire 20 minutes of play...Minnesota scored the eventual game-winner with 3:56 remaining on the second period clock...The goal came after Badger goalie, Meghan Horras (Appleton, Wis.), saved shots taken by Gopher skaters Erica McKenzie and Jenelle Philipczyk...The third time was the charm as Gigi Marvin picked up the second saved shot and tipped the puck in for the goal...The Badgers held the advantage in in face-offs, 39-21, but Wisconsin's Cyndy Kenyon (Sparta, Wis.) scored the Badgers only point of the game...UW's six-skater surge came too late in the game, as on the next face-off, Minnesota's Bobbi Ross prevailed and pushed the puck down the ice and into the net, adding insurance to their victory with only 16 seconds left on the clock...Goaltenders Horras and Hanlon both ended the night with 25 saves...In only her second loss of the season, Horras fell to 13-2-1...Wisconsin's final regular season home games will take place Feb. 17-18 against Minnesota State...Although the Badgers have secured the conference title, the team looks to improve their standing in the nation...The puck is set to drop at 7:07 p.m. both Friday and Saturday...The team's five seniors will be honored in their final home game of the regular season, Feb. 18.
