Madison, Wis. - The two teams tied atop the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings did battle over the weekend, and came out of the two-game series remained in a tie for first. No. 2 Minnesota (21-4-/14-3-1) and No. 4 Wisconsin (18-5-3/14-5-1) each posted a victory in the series held at Minnesota's Ridder Arena. Friday night, the Badgers posted a 2-1 overtime win while Saturday, the Gophers responded with a 2-1 win of their own. The teams remain in a tie for first place with 29 points each.

Minnesota Duluth (15-9-2/11-6-1), ranked sixth nationally, moved into sole possession of third place after a road series sweep at Bemidji State (5-24-1/3-17-0). The Bulldogs recorded back-to-back shutouts with an 8-0 win Friday and a 6-0 victory Saturday. Ohio State (14-10-2/10-9-1) and Minnesota State (14-10-3/7-8-3) occupy fourth and fifth, respectively, after their weekend series split in Mankato. Minnesota State earned a 4-1 win Friday night but the Buckeyes answered with a 2-0 win Saturday. St. Cloud State 6-19-1/3-14-1) lost twice to non-conference opponent, North Dakota. Saturday, the Huskies were edged 3-2 in overtime and fell 7-4 Sunday.

The WCHA dominates the 2004 Patty Kazmaier Award finalists. Five players from three institutions were named to the top 10 list including Minnesota's Krissy Wendell and Natalie Darwitz; Minnesota Duluth's Jenny Potter and Caroline Ouellette; and Minnesota State's Shari Vogt. The award, presented to the top player in women's collegiate hockey, will be announced March 27.

This weekend's schedule finds Minnesota Duluth at St. Cloud State, Minnesota at Ohio State and Bemidji State at Minnesota State in WCHA play Friday and Saturday. Wisconsin hosts Niagara in a two-game non-conference series Friday and Saturday.

Bemidji State - Bemidji State continues Western Collegiate Hockey Association play with a two-game set at Minnesota State on Friday, Feb. 20 and Saturday, Feb. 21. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. Friday night and 3:05 p.m. Saturday afternoon...The Beavers hold a 8-8-4 record against the Mavericks in 20 previous meetings. However, BSU is winless its last five meetings against MSU, including a pair of losses (1-2, 1-3) earlier this season in Bemidji. (Oct. 24-25, 2003)... BSU (5-24-1, 3-17-0 WCHA) was shut out in consecutive contests (0-8, 0-6) at home by Minnesota Duluth (15-9-2, 11-6-1 WCHA) on Friday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14...Jenny Poter and Caroline Ouellette each tallied hat tricks to help lead UMD to a 8-0 triumph Friday night...In the second stanza the Bulldogs outshot the Beavers 14-1, but only scored once, as Ouellette scored her second marker of the game. UMD added three more scored in the final period of regulation. Sophomore Jill Luebke made 21 saves in a losing effort. The eight goals allowed by Luebke were the most she has surrendered during her career, eclipsing her previous high of seven set earlier this season at Minnesota (15-5-03). The Bulldogs posted a 6-0 victory Saturday night...Unlike Friday night, in which UMD tallied four first period goals, Minnesota Duluth lit the lamp just once in Saturday's game. UMD three goals in the second session off goals to give them a 4-0 advantage. Senior goalkeeper Anik Côté prevented what could have been an even higher scoring sequence by stopping 24 shots in the first two periods of action. Côté ended her career at the John Glas Fieldhouse by making 32 saves...Head coach Bruce Olson is 1-3-2 all-time against Minnesota State and holds an 8-30-6 record in games against teams from the WCHA...BSU has posted a record of 28-73-15 in WCHA competition, including a 3-17-0 mark this season.

Minnesota - Minnesota and Wisconsin ended its series just as they started, in a tie for the top spot in the WCHA. The Badgers won the first contest, 2-1 in overtime, while the Golden Gophers added their own 2-1 win Saturday. In the first game of the series, Minnesota's Krissy Wendell scored first with a power-play goal at 14:34 of the second period. Wisconsin quickly tied the game, 1-1 at 17:07 of the first. The game remained at 1-1 sending it into overtime. At 2:20 of the extra period, Badger defenseman, Carla MacLeod scored the unassisted, game-winning goal...The second game proved similar fashion to Friday's game. Minnesota scored first again, by Wendell with the assists going to Kelly Stephens and Krista Johnson at 13:57 of the first. Wisconsin scored just 00:25 seconds later putting the game back at a tie. Noelle Sutton scored the gamewinner at 6:43 of the third with Jerilyn Glenn and Andrea Nichols credited with the assists. That would be all junior goalie Brenda Reinen would need as she stopped 27 Badger shots on goal for her fifth win of the season...The Gophers' win on Saturday broke Wisconsin's 10-game unbeaten streak, which was the longest streak in the nation. Minnesota has ended three unbeaten streaks this season, all of which came second half of the year. Mercyhurst entered the Minnesota series with an eight-game unbeaten streak before falling to the Gophers, 5-1. Dartmouth had a 12-game unbeaten streak snapped in the 7-3 loss Feb. 8. All three streaks were the longest in the country at the time...Krissy Wendell had a goal in each game of the Wisconsin series. With her goals, Wendell has a 17-game scoring streak. In her past 10 games, Wendell has tallied 22 points and 35 during the streak. Wendell has scored four points in two games in her 17-game performance. She collected four against Mercyhurst (1/16) and followed with a four-point performance against Bemidji State (2/1)...The Golden Gophers remain on top of the Division I USCHO.com Pairwise Rankings. Minnesota holds the top spot, while Harvard is second, Dartmouth is third, St. Lawrence is fourth and Wisconsin is fifth...The Maroon and Gold travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on Ohio State, Feb. 20-21. Both games are slated for a 6:05 p.m. (CST) start. The Gophers hold a 17-3-0 record against the Buckeyes. OSU visited Minnesota earlier this season with the Gophers earning a 6-3, 7-0 series sweep at Ridder Arena.

Minnesota Duluth - The Bulldogs shutout Bemidji State this weekend earning the second sweep of the Beavers during the 2003-04 season (8-0, 6-0). UMD held Bemidji State scoreless against the Bulldogs the entire 2003-04 campaign. The Bulldogs have now defeated the Beavers in the last seven straight outings and are 19-0-1 all time against Bemidji State...During Friday nights game Jenny Potter tallied seven points to earn a place in the Bulldog record books as UMD's career points leader. Prior to the game she need five marks to earn the honor and surpassed the milestone with a hat trick, including two short-handed goals on the same penalty kill. On Saturday she added five more assists and moved up to first in scoring for the Bulldogs on the season over line mate Caroline Ouellette, who is just one point behind Potter. Ouellette had an impressive weekend as well, garnering a hat trick and four assists on Friday and a goal and an assist on Saturday.the third skater in UMD's power line, Jessica Koizumi, also faired well over the weekend. Koizumi tallied the game-winning goal and an assist on Friday before leaving the game due to injury, but then came back on Saturday to record the second hat trick of her young career and score four goals on just four shots, including her second game-winning goal of the weekend...Julie Fearing scored her first goal and points of the season on Friday, she now has a career total of 2-3-5. Senior defenseman Satu Kiipeli also recorded her first goal of the season on Saturday...Every player that made the trip to Bemidji State saw action in the games over the weekend, including all three Bulldog goaltenders. Riitta Schaublin got the start in both the Friday and Saturday events, while Anna-Kaisa Piiroinen came in part way through the third on Friday and Shannon Kasparek played the second and third periods on Saturday...With the two victories and a loss by Ohio State, UMD is now all alone in third place in the WCHA...The Bulldogs outshot the Beavers 67-28 (29-11, 38-17) and have now outshot their opponents in the last three series...Only three UMD skaters have not scored a goal during the 2003-04 campaign...After this weekend's action Caroline Ouellette and Jenny Potter are No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the nation in points per game (2.42, 2.27), while Potter is first in the nation with seven game-winning goals, and Ouellette is first in assists per game (1.46). Potter also leads the league in scoring with Ouellette nipping at her heals in second...The Bulldogs are now 12-9-2, 11-6-1 WCHA and will continue their three series road trip next weekend at St. Cloud State. UMD swept the Huskies on Jan. 24-25 at the DECC (8-3, 9-3). The puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m. both Friday and Saturday nights.

Minnesota State - Minnesota State garnered a split this weekend with Ohio State. The Mavericks topped the Buckeyes 4-1 on Friday before falling 2-0 in the series finale. The win was the first ever over OSU in 19 tries. The teams have tied twice including once this season...With the win over Ohio State, the Mavericks have beaten three WCHA teams this season that they had never beaten before. They also topped Minnesota Duluth twice to open the season before besting Minnesota on Jan. 25. Wisconsin is the only team left to beat and they are the only team to sweep MSU this season...The game on Friday also gave MSU its 14th win of the season. That tied the team record for wins in a season, set in the inaugural 1998-99 season when the Mavericks compiled a 14-15 mark...The Mavericks have been stingy with their leads this season. When taking a lead into the second period, Minnesota State owns a record of 7-0-1. If the team comes out for the final session with a lead, they hold a 10-0-1 mark...Senior goaltender Shari Vogt had a solid weekend in goal once again despite facing a 68-49 shot disadvantage on the weekend. She stopped 37 of 38 shots faced on Friday and 28 of 30 on Saturday. Both goals in the second game were power-play tallies. With her performance, she lowered her goals against average from 2.11 to 2.06 and upped her save percentage two points to .939. Her 799 saves on the season rank second nationally and represent the third-best season total in team history. Vogt owns the top two season totals as well, with a record 932 saves coming last season...Now with 17 goals on the season, junior forward Melanie Salatino is just one shy of tying the Minnesota State single-season record set by Michelle Sikich in 1998-99. Salatino recorded two goals Friday to break out of a four-game scoring slump. It was her fourth multi-goal game of the season. Salatino already broke one record this season with her 10 power-play goals and is just one shy of tying the career record of 14...The log-jam of Maverick players with a pair of game-winning goals has ended. Freshman Autumn Conway had the first multi-goal game of her career on Friday, including notching her third game-winner of the season. She scored the second Maverick goal just 48 seconds into the second period of the 4-1 win on a pass from fellow freshman Megan Jedinak. With the Buckeye goaltender pulled and under a minute left in the game, Conway took a pass from senior Amanda Osborn and launched a shot from deep in the Maverick end of the rink that found the empty net. She leads all freshman and ranks third overall in team scoring at 6-10-16...Minnesota State continues its homestand next weekend with a pair of contests against Bemidji State at All Seasons Arena.

Ohio State - Ohio State earned two conference points as it split with Minnesota State last weekend in Mankato, Minn. OSU fell, 4-1, Friday and shut out MSU, 2-0, Saturday...OSU's penalty-killing unit held MSU scoreless on all six power-play chances on the weekend. The Buckeyes have stopped their opponents on 102-of-112 power-plays this season...The Buckeyes scored two power-play goals in the game Saturday, marking the first time they have scored twice on a man-advantage in 14 games. OSU has scored on 18-of-123 power-play goals this season...OSU outshot MSU 68-49 on the weekend, marking the 13th time the Buckeyes have taken more shots than their opponents this season...Senior Emma Laaksonen is three points away from setting an all-time OSU career record of 99 points following her two assists in the game Saturday. Laaksonen continues to lead the squad with 13 assists, nine power-play points and is third on the team with 16 points this season...Sophomore Jana Harrigan scored the Buckeyes' lone goal unassisted in the loss Friday and followed with the game-winning power-play goal in the 2-0 shutout Saturday. Harrigan continues to lead the team with 21 points, 11 goals and 10 assists, this season...Defenseman Tessa Bonhomme led the Ohio State freshman class with two assists in the split with Minnesota State last weekend. She led the squad with 13 shots on goal between the two games. Bonhomme continues to lead the squad with 13 assists this season and is tied for fourth on the team with 15 points...The Buckeyes look to improve upon their 7-3-1 home record as they return to the OSU Ice Rink for a match-up with the Minnesota Golden Gophers at 7:05 p.m. EST Feb. 20-21 in Columbus, Ohio....The Golden Gophers lead the all-time series 17-3-0 and 7-1-0 in Columbus. Earlier this season, Minnesota defeated OSU, 6-3, Oct. 17 and, 7-0, Oct. 18 in Minneapolis.

St. Cloud State - St. Cloud State was swept by North Dakota 3-2 (ot) and 7-4 in their last non-conference series of the season in Grand Forks. Saturday's loss to North Dakota marked the first time in school history that the Huskies lost to UND. They were 6-0-0 all-time against UND coming into Saturday's game...SCSU's top line of Ashley Stewart, Roxy Stang and Carrie Holldorf accounted in the scoring for both Husky goals on Saturday. Stewart scored the Huskies initial goal on assists from Kobi Kawamoto and Stang, while Stang scored St. Cloud's second goal of the game on an assist by Holldorf...In Sunday's loss, Stang scored her 11th goal of the season on an assist by Holldorf. Holldorf and Stang both lead SCSU with 14 assists on the season...Stewart scored two consecutive power-play goals in the third period nearly two minutes apart to cut the UND lead to 5-4. She is tied with Carrie Holldorf for the team lead with 12 goals on the season. She also leads the team in power-play goals with five...Saturday's 3-2 overtime loss marked the first time this season that SCSU has lost after leading after two periods. They were 6-0-0 in previous games where they led after two periods...Sunday's 7-4 loss to UND, the Huskies outshot UND 37-29...Sunday also saw junior Kari Turkowski dress in a Husky sweater for the first time since joining the team in January...The Huskies gave up seven third period goals against North Dakota...They will now host the University of Minnesota Duluth in a two-game WCHA series on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.

Wisconsin - Wisconsin skated to a series split with Minnesota this weekend in Minneapolis to remain tied for first-place in league play...The fourth-ranked Badgers defeated the second-ranked Golden Gophers 2-1 in overtime Friday night to stand alone at the top of the conference for the day, but were edged 2-1 Saturday night to fall back in to deadlock...UW team captain Carla MacLeod, a Wisconsin junior, scored the game-winning overtime goal Friday night at 2:20 of the extra period...The Badgers were lead in scoring for the series by frosh Sara Bauer and Lindsay Macy who each tallied a goal and an assist on the weekend...Sophomore goaltender Meghan Horras earned the split in net for the UW with 56 saves against the Golden Gophers...Horras continues to lead the nation's Division I women's goaltenders with a 1.23 goals-against average...Wisconsin returns home this weekend for a non-conference series against Niagara at the Kohl Center.
