MADISON, Wisc. - Minnesota Duluth (24-4-2/22-4-2) spoiled Minnesota's (30-2-2/25-1-2) bid for an unbeaten league season as the Bulldogs posted a 4-2 win Saturday. The Bulldogs made the most of their special teams with two power play goals and Caroline Ouellette scored the game-winning goal shorthanded. Natalie Darwitz and Andrea Nichols scored for the Gophers. Minnesota came back to salvage a split with a 1-0 victory Sunday. Krissy Wendell's unassisted goal early in the second period proved to be the deciding tally. The win gave Minnesota 52 points in conference play, the most by any team in the league's six-year history while the 25 league wins is also a new record. Minnesota hit the 30-win mark for the second-straight season.
Wisconsin (26-7-1/20-7-1) swept St. Cloud State (9-21-4/7-18-3) to extend its winning streak to eight games heading into the playoffs. Friday, the Badgers posted a 5-2 victory led by Molly Engstrom's two power play goals. Wisconsin then completed its fourth-straight series sweep with a 6-3 win Saturday. Sara Bauer paced the Badgers with two goals.
Ohio State (16-15-3/12-15-1) and Minnesota State (9-19-6/8-17-3) split their series with the Buckeyes winning by a 5-3 score Friday and the Mavericks coming back to win Saturday, 3-2. In Ohio State's victory Friday, Jeni Creary led the way with a hattrick which included a power play goal. Saturday, Amanda Stohr, Cara Hendry and Autumn Conway scored to lead the Mavericks. North Dakota (9-22-3/6-21-1) and Bemidji State (9-23-2/5-22-1) also split their weekend series. Bemidji State won Friday's contest, 5-1, while North Dakota came back to edge Bemidji State, 2-1, Saturday. Nikki Eckebrecht scored twice, including once on the power play, the lead the Beavers to their win while Cara Wooster scored both of North Dakota's goals in their win.
The 2005 WCHA Playoff Championship will be held Thursday through Sunday, March 3-6, at Ridder Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The four-day championship features all eight conference-member teams in Bemidji State, Minnesota, Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State, North Dakota, Ohio State, St. Cloud State and Wisconsin. Play starts Thursday, March 3 with No. 7 North Dakota taking on No. 2 Minnesota Duluth at 4:05 p.m. followed by No. 1 Minnesota facing No. 8 Bemidji State at 7:05 p.m. Friday's quarterfinal match-ups feature rematches of this pas weekend as No. 3 Wisconsin and No. 6 St. Cloud State meet at 4:05 p.m. and No. 4 Ohio State takes on No. 5 Minnesota State at 7:05 p.m. The semifinals will be played Saturday, March 5 at 4:05 and 7:05 p.m. Sunday, March 6 the Third-place Game will be played at 1:05 p.m. followed by the Championship Game at 4:05 p.m. All times are Central. BEMIDJI STATE BEAVERS
Bemidji State played host to the North Dakota Fighting Sioux on Friday and Saturday. In a weekend battle for the seventh spot in the WCHA Bemidji State came up just short losing game two 2-1 after winning the first match of the series 5-1...After a scoreless first period Friday Night, the Beavers put on a charge in the second period taking a commanding 3-1 lead behind two goals from sophomore forward Nikki Eckebrecht. Kelly Hart notched two of her game-high three points with an assist on each of the Eckebrecht scores. With helpers from Mandy Bambrough and Tara Hiscock, Carly Napier also picked up a goal in the period. After giving up just one UND goal in the second period freshman goaltender Emily Brookshaw and the Beaver defense put the clamps down on the Fighting Sioux for the third period. Two more Beaver goals, this time by Jenny Schnickel and Kate Robinson, gave BSU a healthy 5-1 win...Saturday afternoon, Bemidji State came sprinting out of the gates and gave themselves a one goal lead just 60 seconds into the first period. Freshman Jessica Pullar took a beautiful centering pass from Kate Robinson and quickly put the puck home for a 1-0 lead. UND netminder Amber Hasbargen, however, would not let the Beavers light the lamp again. A second period goal from UND's Cara Wooster tied the score at 1-1. The score would remain until Wooster found the net once again on the power play with just two seconds remaining. BSU goalie Emily Brookshaw stopped 29 shots in the loss...Jenny Schnickel's goal in game one gave surpassed her previous season-high point total. Kate Robinson started a two-game point scoring streak with a goal and an assist in game one and an assist in game two. Bemidji State finished eighth in the WCHA just two points behind North Dakota...The Beavers will take on the University of Minnesota in the first round of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament. The Golden Gophers are the first seed in the WCHA. Faceoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005 at Ridder Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota...Head Coach Bruce Olson holds an 0-11-1 record all-time versus Minnesota. Olson has posted a 15-58-9 record against current members of the WCHA...BSU owns a 34-116-18 record against current WCHA opponents. Bemidji State is 0-4-0 all-time in the WCHA tournament. Bemidji State holds an 0-22-3 mark all-time versus the University of Minnesota with the last tie coming in a 2-2 game at Ridder Arena on Nov. 9, 2005. The Gophers have won 10 straight contests versus Bemidji State including all four games this season. Minnesota shut out the Beavers in each of the last two meetings, 5-0 and 2-0. The two teams have never met in a WCHA tournament game.
Minnesota Golden Gophers
The No. 1 University of Minnesota women's hockey team concluded its regular
season with a series spilt against No. 2 Minnesota-Duluth, this past
weekend. The Gophers fell, 4-2 in Saturday's action, while posting a 1-0
shutout over the Bulldogs, Sunday, for the split. It is the first time in
the last 14 tries that the Gophers shut out UMD in scoring. The last time
came in the 1-0 win against the Bulldogs, Jan. 18, 2002.
The Gophers concluded the regular season with a 25-1-2 record. The mark was the best conference record for the Maroon and Gold since the inception of the WCHA in the 1999-2000 season. In the inaugural year and the 2001-02 campaign, the Gophers lost two conference games. Of the four losses during those two years, three of the four came against the Bulldogs. The Gophers finish the regular season with an overall record of 30-2-2. The last time the Gophers posted over 30 wins in a season dates back to the 1999-2000 championship season when the Gophers went 32-6-1.
Jody Horak earned her eighth shutout of the season in the 1-0 win. She stopped all 32 shots in Sunday's contest for a season high. In Saturday's game, Horak had 18 saves and allowed three goals. In her career, Horak has 20 shutouts in her career.
The Gophers have shutout every WCHA opponent at least once this season. Of Minnesota's 13 shutouts, 12 have come against WCHA competition. Minnesota has allowed one goal or held its opponents scoreless in 22 of 34 games this season. The most goals allowed was seven in the Gophers' lone loss of the season to Dartmouth (12/11).
Natalie Darwitz and Andrea Nichols scored goals in Saturday's 4-2 loss, while Krissy Wendell added the Gophers' lone goal in Sunday's victory. Of the three goals, two were unassisted. Darwitz scored a short-handed goal, the Gophers' 19th short-handed tally of the season. The Gophers are the only team in the nation to post over 11 short-handed goals this season. Mercyhurst has 10 on the year.
Minnesota hosts the WCHA Championships, held in Ridder Arena, March 3-6. The Gophers will compete on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. against Bemidji State. Minnesota won the two regular season series against the Beavers, 4-0-0. In the last series, the Maroon and Gold won 2-0 and 5-0, Jan. 7-8. If the Gophers win, they advance to the semifinal game on Saturday night. The times for the semifinals is 4:05 p.m. and 7:05 p.m. The third-place and championship game will be held on March 6 at 1:05 and 4:05 p.m.
Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs
The No.2 Bulldogs earned a series split with the No. 1 University of Minnesota with a 4-2 victory on Saturday before falling 1-0 on Sunday...Saturday saw the largest regular season home crowd for UMD, as 3,001 fans were in attendance for the victory. The previous high for a home game was 2,697 set during the first ever home game against Finland on Oct. 15, 1999...The Bulldogs ended the year with a 13-1-0 record at home...UMD was able to break the Gophers 15 game winning streak and handed them their first loss in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association for the 2004-2005 season. UMD was spurred on to victory with the retirement of the first number in women's collegiate hockey history as the Bulldog honored Maria Roth with the retirement of the number 27 in a pre-game ceremony on Saturday...UMD was the only team all year to keep Minnesota scoreless on the power-play as the Gophers went 0 for 15 on the weekend...Despite the victory on Saturday the Bulldogs were out shot 2-1 (42-22)...Each team earned a short-handed goal on Saturday. It was the third time the UMD allowed a short-handed tally on the season and only the second for the Gophers...Caroline Ouellette's short-handed tally inched her farther up the all-time scoring charts. She is now just two points away from moving into third on the UMD Career Total Points charts and 20 assists away from taking over first in the assist column...Patricia Sautter-Elsmore let in only the second goal of the year during Sunday's game in her in four games...After this weekend's series the Bulldogs were finally able to determine who they would face in the first round of the WCHA playoffs. UMD will battle with North Dakota at 4 p.m. on Thursday, March 3.
Minnesota State Mavericks
Minnesota State split a WCHA series against Ohio State in Columbus on the weekend to conclude the regular season. The Mavericks broke out of a four-game goal-scoring slump on Friday but fell to the Buckeyes 5-3. The following afternoon, MSU snapped a nine-game losing streak by scoring twice in the final three minutes of play to top OSU 3-2. It marked just the second win over Ohio State for Minnesota State since the series started in 1999-00. The first came last season, a 4-1 home win on Feb. 13...Minnesota State tallied the first goal but fell behind in both games on the weekend. On Friday, Ohio State goals late in the second and early in the third period proved to be the difference. The following afternoon, the hosts pulled ahead with goals in the early part of the second and third but MSU put two goals into the Buckeye net at 17:14 and 18:59 to ice the game...The Mavericks also secured fifth place in the conference with the win, concluding the season with 19 points and an 8-17-3 mark in circuit play...Four Maverick players broke out of their personal scoring slumps with multi-point weekends. The group was led by freshman forward Kristina Bunker who aided on three MSU goals on the weekend to vault into a share of the team lead with 19 points on four goals and 15 assists. Linemate Amanda Stohr tallied a goal in both games, including her team-best fourth power-play goal on Friday and first career game-winner on Saturday. Senior Melanie Salatino scored one goal and assisted on two others for a three-point weekend, moving into sole ownership of second on the MSU career scoring charts with 63 points in the process. The first-line trio finished the weekend in a dead heat for the team scoring lead with 19 points apiece...Sophomore Cara Hendry earned a goal and an assist in Saturday's win for her first career multi-point effort. Now 3-3-6 on the season, all three goals have come on the power-play to rank in a tie for second on the team. She had one goal last season, also on the power-play, to beat Minnesota Duluth on Oct. 11...By playing on Saturday, senior forward Kristina Koga equalled the team record for career games played with 135. On Friday, junior defenseman Amber Sharratt became the 12th player in team history to suit up in over 100 games. Teammates Kearstin Solberg and Melanie Salatino accomplished the feat this season as well...Sophomore Autumn Conway tallied her first goal since Nov. 13, with a breakaway score on Saturday. Conway has seen action at both forward and defense this season, scoring 2-7-9...As the fifth seed in the WCHA, Minnesota State will again square off against Ohio State on Friday, March 4, in the first round of the WCHA Playoff Championship. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m. at Ridder Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota. It will be a rematch of the first round of last season's WCHA Final Five, where the Buckeyes ended the season for Minnesota State by a score of 3-1. It will also mark the first time in team history the Mavericks have faced the same opponent in three straight games.
North Dakota Fighting Sioux
UND finished in seventh-place in the WCHA standings with a 6-21-1 conference record and will open the playoffs against second-place Minnesota Duluth...The Sioux have lost all eight games against UMD in the all-time series, including four this season...UND clinched seventh place with a series split at Bemidji State to close out the regular season, losing 5-1 on Friday and winning 2-1 on Saturday...Sophomore F Alexia Gagnon Laplante scored UND's lone goal in Friday's loss, while junior G Amber Hasbargen made 17 saves. Gagnon Laplante's goal was her first since Nov. 12...The Sioux rebounded the next day thanks to a pair of goals from freshman F Cara Wooster, including the game-winner on the power-play with just two seconds left in regulation. The two-goal outing gave her a team-leading 15 goals on the season. Hasbargen made 26 saves...Wooster has seven goals in her last seven games and her 15 goals are the third-highest single-season total in program history...Friday's 5-1 loss to the Beavers was UND's first ever at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse. The Sioux had gone 3-0-1 in their first four games at Bemidji State. It was also Hasbargen's first loss against BSU since Nov. 6, 2002...Junior F Liz Funk and junior D Devon Fingland each played in their 91st and 92nd consecutive games against Bemidji State, extending their team records. Funk and Fingland are the only two UND players to have played in every game in program history...Funk drew an assist on Friday and is now just three points of breaking Stasia Bakhit's all-time scoring record (63)...Fingland needs just two points to break Abbey Strong's career record for points by a defenseman (29)...Hasbargen extended her school record string of consecutive starts to nine when she received the starting nod in both games at Bemidji State. Hasbargen has appeared in a career-high 24 games this season...Freshman D Stefanie Ubl returned to the lineup against Bemidji State after missing the St. Cloud State series one week earlier. Meanwhile, sophomore D Rachel Cutcliffe missed her seventh and eighth consecutive games...Freshman F Melissa Dianoski took a minor penalty on Saturday to give her 80 penalty minutes on the season, breaking teammate Jessica Kovacevich's single-season team record. Kovacevich had 78 PIM as a freshman in 2002-03.
Ohio State Buckeyes
Ohio State split a home series against Minnesota State last weekend in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes defeated MSU, 5-3, Friday and fell, 3-2, in the final minutes Saturday. The Buckeyes held their opponents scoreless on 9-of-11 power-play chances on the weekend. OSU's power play capitalized on 2-of-5 opportunities Saturday to close out the weekend 3-for-11. Senior Buckeye Jeni Creary recorded her first hat trick of the season in OSU's 5-3 victory Friday, marking her first hat trick of the season...OSU's leading points scorer, Jana Harrigan led the Buckeye squad with five points vs. MSU last weekend. Friday, Harrigan had a hand in four of OSU's five goals. She scored a goal and tallied three assists as she hit the 50-point mark this season. She scored an additional goal Saturday to improve to 51 points, on 16 goals and 35 assists...Prior to the game Saturday the five OSU seniors were honored for their efforts over four years - Jeni Creary, Jennifer Desson, Melissa Glaser, Jaclyn Haines and Meaghan Mulvaney...Forward Mallory Peckels lead the rookie class as she scored goal a tallied two assists vs. MSU. Peckels posted two assists Friday, marking her third multiple-point game this season...Minnesota State halted Jeni Creary's point streak to seven games this season. Creary has posted six goals and five assists during her stretch. She leads the squad in goals with 26 and is second on the team in points with 41...Ohio State travels to Minneapolis, Minn., for the 2005 WCHA Playoff Championship March 3-6 at Ridder Arena. The Buckeyes are the No. 4 seed in the tournament and will face No. 5 Minnesota State Friday at 8:05 EST...In the first round of the 2005 WCHA Playoff Championship, Ohio State will face Minnesota State for the second-consecutive year. The Buckeyes defeated the Mavericks, 3-1, March 12, 2004...Over the past five seasons, the Buckeyes have tallied a 7-8 record, including a perfect record against three WCHA teams - Bemidji State (2-0), Minnesota State (1-0) and St. Cloud State (2-0).
St. Cloud State Huskies
SCSU dropped their last home series of the regular season to No. 4 Wisconsin, as they lost on Friday night, 5-2, and on Saturday night 6-3. The Huskies finish the regular season with a 9-21-4, 7-18-3 WCHA regular season record. Wisconsin leads the overall series against St. Cloud with a 17-3-0 advantage, and by winning the last 10 of 11 games against the Huskies. November 9, 2002 marks the last time the Huskies have defeated the Badgers, as they won 5-3. With the losses this past weekend, the Huskies clinch sixth place in the conference and will face Wisconsin, who finished 3rd in the WCHA, in the 2005 WCHA Playoff Championships. The game will be played on Friday, March 4, at the Ridder Arena in Minneapolis. The puck is set to be dropped at 4:05 p.m. CT. This year marks the first time that all eight teams in the WCHA will participate in the WCHA Playoff Championships...The Huskies honored their four seniors this past weekend: team captain Tina Ciraulo (Fraser, Mich.), assistant captain Carrie Holldorf (Glenwood City, Wisc.), Melanie Pudsey (Erin, Ontario) and Kari Turkowski (Cold Spring, Minn.). There careers consist of: Tina Ciraulo...has appeared in 132 games for the Huskies in her four-year standout career which ranks 4th on the SCSU all-time list of career games played...currently ranks 9th on the career scoring list with 53 points (19 g, 34 a)...ranks 10th on the career assists list with 35 assists...and currently is the career leader in penalties and penalty minutes, having 105 penalties and serving 234 minutes...A sport management major here at SCSU...Carrie Holldorf...joined the team in 2002 after transfering from Providence College...appeared in 100 total games as a Husky which ranks 9th on the SCSU all-time list of career games played...currently ranks 3rd on the all-time scoring list with 72 points (26 g, 46 a)...she ranks 6th on the goals scored list with 26...and ranks 4th on the assists leader list with 46 in the three-year career here at SCSU...a business major here at SCSU...Melanie Pudsey...joined the team in 2001 with team captain Ciraulo...has appeared in 128 games for the Huskies which ranks 5th on the SCSU all-time list of career games played...she has scored 29 total career points (16 g, 13 a)...for her career high she scored 4 points against Minnesota State on February 24, 2002...an aviation major here at SCSU...Kari Turkowski...joined the team in December 2003 after finishing her four-year standout career as a volleyball player here at SCSU...has appeared in 26 games for the Husky women's hockey team...scored her first career goal against Minnesota State on Jan. 7, 2005...followed up that goal with her first career assist against Bemidji State University on Jan. 14 in the National Hockey Center...an accounting and communications studies double major here at SCSU...The Huskies continue to be led in scoring by junior forwards Ashley Stewart and Kristy Oonincx. A. Stewart has 10 goals and 23 assists on the season with a .092 shooting percentage. Oonincx leads the team with 14 goals and has 9 assists with a team-leading .139 shooting percentage. On the weekend agaisnt Wisconsin. A. Stewart had an assist on Friday night and an assist on Saturday afternoon for two points on the weekend. Oonincx also had two points on the weekend as she scored her 14th goal of the season in Saturday's game and also added an assist on the day...First-year forward Laura Fast had a promising weekend offensively as she scored three points against Wisconsin. On Friday night, she scored a goal in the second period to cut the Badger lead to 3-2. On Saturday, she had two assist to give her 14 total points in the season (5 g, 9 a). L. Fast currently ranks 7th on the team in scoring this year...SCSU sophomore goaltender, Lauri St. Jacques, has surpassed her total of saves from last year of 371 in 2003-04. Currently she has 579 saves, which ranks 4th on the SCSU all-time goalie saves list in a season. St. Jacques as appeared in 22 games for the Huskies in 2004-05. She has a GAA of 3.40, has played 1269:08 minutes, and has one shut-out on the season. Her record stands at 5-14-3.
Wisconsin Badgers
No. 4 Wisconsin (26-7-1, 20-7-1 WCHA) closed out its regular season schedule over the weekend with a sweep, 5-2, 6-3, over St. Cloud State (9-21-4, 7-18-3 WCHA). The win gave the Badgers 26 on the season, a new program-high number of wins. The 20 conference wins is also a UW season-high...On an eight-game winning streak, Wisconsin boast the second longest streak in the nation...Finishing the regular season at third in the conference, Wisconsin will face No. 6 St. Cloud State again on Friday, March 4 at 4:05 p.m. in the second day of the WCHA tournament at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis...With 11 goals over the weekend, several Badgers increased their stats in the final series of the regular season. Friday night, senior Molly Engstrom put the Badgers on the board during the first power play of the game. Lindsay Macy and Sharon Cole added assists which extended Cole's point streak to eight games, scoring in Saturday's game gave her a team- and season-leading nine-game scoring streak. Coincidentally, Engstrom's goal ended her eight-game goal drought...St. Cloud State was quick to answer. Back to full strength, Randie Jelinski marked her second goal of the season just 25 seconds later. In the second, Engstrom rocketed one of her signature slapshots from the point and with a clang of the post the puck ricocheted into the net to put the Badgers in the lead at 5:07 in the second. The Badgers would score again, this time short-handed, when Sara Bauer sped down the ice and notched her 23rd goal of the season and her first-ever short-handed score. SCSU used a two-skater advantage at 7:27 to score its second goal. Weaving her way out of the corner at 11:24, Macy tallied her third unassisted goal of the season finding the narrow slot above goalie Lauri St. Jacques' stick-side shoulder. In the third, Wisconsin inked its fifth and final goal as junior Cyndy Kenyon combined with defenders Nicole Uliasz and Bobbi-Jo Slusar for the score. Saturday afternoon, an active first period reflected a charged St. Cloud State team on senior day, fighting for an edge in the conference standings. Wisconsin scored the first two goals of the game with tallies by Kenyon and Macy at 5:08 and 7:04, respectively. Moments after Macy's goal, SCSU got on the board and then added a second goal at 7:25. Wisconsin regained the lead with a Bauer goal on a breakaway at 12:22 as she neatly slotted the puck in the goal on goalie St. Jacques' glove side. As if replaying a Friday night goal, Engstrom wound up to fire a power-play slapshot from the point at 3:32 to start the second period. The clang of the pipe over St. Jacques' glove-side shoulder as the puck rebounded into the goal signaled the Badgers' fourth score and Engstrom's third in two games.
