GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Winny Brodt's goal from the point 31 seconds into the third period proved to be the game-winning tally as Minnesota advanced to the 2003 WCHA Women's Final Five Championship Game with a 3-1 victory over Wisconsin at Ralph Engelstad Arena on Friday.
The Badgers went on top first when Steph Millar scored at 9:37 of the first period to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead. Steph Boeckmann put the puck deep into the Minnesota right corner, recovered it and got it to Nikki Burish near the face-off dot. The frosh spotted Millar open through the slot, who then hit the far side for her eighth of the year.
Burish was whistled for an interference penalty at 18:54, and the Gophers capitalized to tie the game. Natalie Darwitz scored on her own rebound after taking a pass from Kelly Stephens for her 31st of the season.
Neither team scored during the second, but back-to-break breakaways made it interesting. Senior goaltender Jackie MacMillan made a glove save on a Darwitz breakaway to keep the game tied at 13:05. Less than 30 seconds later, Minnesota sophomore goaltender Jody Horak stopped Karen Rickard with her stick to keep the game tied at one.
Minnesota took its first lead of the game, 31 seconds into the final period right off a face-off win. La Toya Clarke won the puck to Kelsey Bills, who fed it back to Winny Brodt at the point. Brodt fired from the point and found room past a screened MacMillan for a 2-1 lead.
With the Badgers on the power play, Clarke made it 3-1, stealing the puck from a UW defender at the Wisconsin blue line. Clarke skated in on MacMillan, two-on-none, and hit the far side for her 10th of the season and third in two games against the Badgers.
The Badgers pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker with 1:52 left in the contest, but failed to crack Horak a second time.
MacMillan made 28 saves in falling to 21-8-5. Horak made 30 saves to improve to 23-4-0. Minnesota meets the winner of Minnesota-Duluth and Ohio State tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. in the title contest. Wisconsin will face the loser at 4:05 p.m. in the third-place contest.
