Three teams from the WCHA were among the eight selected in the 2006 NCAA Women's Ice Hockey Tournament field. Wisconsin (33-4-1), seeded second in the tournament, earned the WCHA automatic bid with its WCHA Playoff Championship Tournament title. Minnesota (27-10-0) and Minnesota Duluth (22-8-3) received at-large bids.

Wisconsin will host Mercyhust (23-7-6) while Minnesota will host Princeton (21-7-4). Minnesota Duluth will travel to St. Lawrence (30-4-2). The quarterfinals will be played Friday, March 17, Saturday, March 18 or Sunday, March 19, depending on the host institution.

All of the NCAA Women's Frozen Four champions have come from the WCHA. Minnesota is the two-time defending national champion, winning the titles in 2004 and 2005 while Minnesota Duluth won the first three NCAA Women's Frozen Four Championships in 2001, 2002 and 2003.
