Wisconsin used an overtime goal from Karen Rickard to record a 5-4 victory over Ohio State this afternoon in the third place game of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Final Five at Ridder Arena.
The Badgers scored three times in the opening period with a pair of goals from Lindsay Macy and one lamplighter from Meghan Hunter. Macy netted her 17th tally of the season at 3:36 of the period, while Hunter secured her 12th marker of the year at the 10:46 mark. Macy struck again at 11:51 of the period to give UW a 3-0 advantage.
In the second stanza, Ohio State erased a three goal deficit with three unanswered goals of its own. Heather Farrell put the Buckeyes on the board at 5:56 with her eighth goal of the 2003-04 campaign. Jana Harrigan and Sara Bauer then added goals at 5:56 and 12:14 to tie the contest at 3-3.
Wisconsin regained the lead at 6:48 of the third period when Sara Bauer notched her eighth goal of the season. OSU knotted the score at 4-4 off a power-play goal from Tessa Bonhomme at the 9:40 mark of the final period. Neither team generated any further scoring in regulation play, prompting an overtime session.
In the extra frame, UW earned the game-winner at 2:19 as Karen Rickard lit the lamp for the 15th time this season.
For the game, Ohio State finished one-for-six on the power play, compared to a zero-for-three clip by Wisconsin.
Meghan Horras stopped 22 shots between the pipes for the Badgers, while Melissa Glaser made 22 saves for the Buckeyes.
The number-one seed Minnesota will challenge the third-seed Minnesota Duluth in the WCHA Final Five Championship game at 4:05 p.m.
