COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Minnesota remained No. 1 in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll for the third consecutive week. The Golden Gophers earned all 19 first-place votes after winning the WCHA Tournament Championship, defeating Ohio State University, 5-1, in the semifinal, and downing No. 6 University of Minnesota-Duluth, 4-2, in the title game. The Bulldogs defeated No. 5 University of Wisconsin in the semifinals to advance to the Championship game. Wisconsin and Ohio State met in the third-place game, and the Badgers earned a 5-4 overtime victory.
Harvard University climbs one place in the poll to No. 2 after sweeping its ECAC quarterfinal series against Cornell University. The Crimson dominated Cornell in both games, defeating the Big Red by scores of 9-1 and 4-1, on Friday and Saturday, respectively. No. 3 Dartmouth faced off against Yale University in a best-of-three series. The Big Green blanked the Bulldogs, 3-0, on Friday and defeated Yale, 4-3, on Saturday to advance to the ECAC semifinals, which take place next Saturday, March 20.
In CHA playoff action, No. 7 Mercyhurst College was crowned conference champion after shutting out Wayne State University, 4-0, in the semifinal game on Saturday, and skating past Niagara University, 3-1, in the title game.
No. 8 New Hampshire faced off against Northeastern University on Saturday to finish the Hockey East regular season. The Wildcats blanked the Huskies, 2-0. Hockey East semifinal and final games will be held March 20 and 21 in Boston, Mass. at the Huskies' home rink.
The seventh annual USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from women's college ice hockey coaches and journalists, as well as composite votes from officers of the American Hockey Coaches Association and American Hockey Magazine, the official publication of USA Hockey.
