Madison, Wis. -- The University of Minnesota received the top seed in the 2004 NCAA Women's Frozen Four Championship field. The National Collegiate Women's Ice Hockey Committee announced the field for the fourth Women's Frozen Four to be held March 26 and 28 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. Yale University and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) are the championship co-hosts. The four team field features the top seed from the East and West regions and two at-large teams.
Minnesota, the nation's top-ranked team, enters the tournament with a 28-4-2 record. The Golden Gophers captured the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) regular-season and tournament titles. The 2004 Frozen Four marks the third-straight appearance for the Golden Gophers in the national championship. The top seed, Minnesota will faced No. 4 Dartmouth (24-6-2) in the first semifinal game on Friday, March 26 at 5 p.m. (EST). The teams split their two-game series at Minnesota February 7-8. Dartmouth won the first game 3-2 while Minnesota posted a 7-3 victory in the second game.
Harvard (29-3-1) received the No. 2 seed and will face ECAC co-regular season champion, St. Lawrence University (27-9-1), in the second semifinal game at 8 p.m. on March 26. The match-up marks the second time in a week, and fourth time this season, that the teams have met. Harvard holds a 3-0 advantage in the series, including a 6-1 win in the ECAC conference tournament championship game.
The semifinal winners will meet in the championship game at 4 p.m. (EST) on Sunday, March 28. The third-place game is scheduled for Sunday at 12:30 p.m. (EST).
Three-time defending champion Minnesota Duluth did not earn a spot in this year's field. The semifinal games and championship game will be televised live on CSTV.
