COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Wisconsin returned to the No. 1 position for the first time since Jan. 31 on the 2005-06 season's final USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll. The Badgers captured their first-ever national championship last weekend with a 3-0 shutout of No. 2 University of Minnesota in the championship game. Wisconsin earned a 1-0 semifinal win over No. 4 St. Lawrence University to advance to the title game.

Meanwhile, Minnesota climbed two spots to No. 2 after advancing to its third straight championship game. The Golden Gophers knocked off then-No. 1 University of New Hampshire, 5-4, in the semifinals before falling in the title game.

NOTES: Last Saturday (March 25), Sara Bauer (University of Wisconsin/St. Catharines, Ont.) won the ninth-annual Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, presented each year by the USA Hockey Foundation to the top player in NCAA Division I women's ice hockey. Bauer became the first Badger ever to receive the award and only the second Western Collegiate Hockey Association player to be so honored. Last year, Krissy Wendell (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) of the University of Minnesota took home the award ... Four different teams held the No. 1 spot on the poll this season, including St. Lawrence, the University of Minnesota Duluth, Wisconsin and New Hampshire ... Seven teams remained on the poll throughout the entire season, including Wisconsin, Minnesota, New Hampshire, St. Lawrence, Minnesota Duluth, Mercyhurst College and Harvard University.

ABOUT THE POLL: The ninth annual USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Women's College Hockey Poll is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the six NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the American Hockey Coaches Association and USA Hockey Magazine, the official publication of USA Hockey.
