COLUMBUS, Ohio - Josh Liegl has been hired as an assistant coach for the Ohio State women's hockey team, head coach Jackie Barto announced Friday (August 15, 2008). Liegl joins the Buckeyes after previously serving as assistant coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Colgate, Findlay and American International College.
"I am really excited to join the Ohio State women's hockey team," Liegl said. "I am proud to become a Buckeye and happy to be coming to such a great school. Jackie is a phenomenal coach and I look forward to working with her."
Liegl's responsibilities with the Buckeyes will include working with goaltenders as well as assisting with recruiting.
"We are very pleased to have Josh join our coaching staff," Barto said. "He has great experience in women's collegiate hockey. Josh possesses a strong passion for the game of hockey. He brings an outstanding knowledge of goaltending and he will be involved in all aspects of the program."
Liegl has six years experience as a coach in collegiate-level women's hockey. Most recently, he coached at RPI for two seasons, working with its goaltenders and defense as well as recruiting in North America. During his first season, RPI qualified for the ECAC quarterfinal playoffs after moving to Division I just a year before. A total of 34 Engineers were named to the ECAC All-Academic teams during his two years.
While at Colgate and Findlay, Liegl coordinated all aspects of recruiting in the U.S. and Canada and developed goaltenders and defense, among other responsibilities.
"As someone from the Midwest, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association is something I've looked up to," Liegl said. "I'm excited for the opportunity to be coaching in such a great league."
As a student-athlete, Liegl was a four-year letterwinner from 1996-2000 at Marian College in Fond du Lac, Wis. He won the All-Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Goaltender awards as a junior and senior and served as team captain both of those seasons. Liegl graduated from Marian in 2001 with a degree in business management with sports management major and coaching minor. He is currently working towards a masters in organizational leadership from Findlay.
Liegl is replacing Katie Lachapelle, who accepted a position as assistant women's hockey coach at Boston University.
