MADISON, Wis. - The WCHA All-Star team dropped a 3-0 game to the 2001 U.S. Women's National Team at the Kohl Center on Friday night. Three different players, including Minnesota-Duluth Bulldog and former Minnesota Golden Gopher Jenny Potter, scored for Team USA. Potter notched the first and game-winning goal.
After a scoreless first period, Jenny Potter converted at 15:05 on a rebound. Karyn Bye deflected a Sue Merz left point shot that WCHA goalie Tuula Puputti stopped. The rebound went to Potter who sat alone in the right slot for the finish.
Team USA added a pair in the third to put the game away. Tricia Dunn scored off her own rebound after her first shot clanked off the post, 2:01 into the stanza. Katie King then clinched it with a wrist shot from the bottom of the left face-off circle at 7:11.
Puputti made 47 saves to help keep the WCHA in the game the entire night. Team USA netminder Sarah Tueting made 15 saves to earn the shut out.
The all-stars had scoring chances, but the best scoring chances of the night came in the third period. Hanne Sikio broke in alone and hit the post on a breakaway. Moments later, a teammate found the same post with a backhand that beat Tueting.
The WCHA All-Stars and Team USA meet again tomorrow at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. The game is slated for a 7:05 p.m., start.
