MADISON, Wis. - Six of seven WCHA teams played conference games last week to kick off the 2000-01 league season. Minnesota earned a home sweep over Minnesota State, while Wisconsin accomplished a sweep on the road at St. Cloud State. In the third series, Ohio State took three of four points from host Bemidji State.

Defending NCAA Champion Minnesota-Duluth opened its season when it played host to Providence. The Bulldogs appeared ready to make another run in their two-game sweep of the Friars.

Action heats up this week as the last two WCHA Champions, Minnesota-Duluth (1999-00) and Minnesota (2000-01), battle at the DECC in Duluth, Minn. The two teams are also the last two national champions with the Gophers winning the title in 2000 and the Bulldogs taking the first NCAA title in 2001.

In other league play, St. Cloud State will travel to Minnesota State as both squads look to earn their first wins of the year.

The rest of the league plays nonconference games including Ohio State visiting New Hampshire, Wayne State visiting Bemidji State and Wisconsin playing host to Connecticut.
