MADISON, Wis. - Perennial powers Minnesota and Minnesota Duluth run 1-2 in the current Western Collegiate Hockey Association women's standings after both clubs completed two-game series sweeps over the Oct. 23-24 weekend. The Golden Gophers stretched their 2009-10 season-opening winning streak to eight while powering past St. Cloud State 4-0 and 7-0 in a home-and-home set while the Bulldogs won twice over visiting North Dakota, 4-1 and 3-1.

As a result, Minnesota (8-0-0, 6-0-0 WCHA) rests in first place in the league race with a perfect 12 points while Minnesota Duluth (5-3-0, 4-2-0 WCHA) is second with eight points.

In the only other WCHA series contested over the weekend, visiting Ohio State captured a 4-3 win at defending national champion Wisconsin in the series opener Friday (Oct. 23) night before the Badgers rallied back to take a 5-3 decision on Saturday (Oct. 24) and gain a split. The Badgers (3-3-0, 3-3-0 WCHA) are currently in third place with six points while the Buckeyes (2-3-3, 2-3-1 WCHA) are fourth with five.

In the fifth spot, Minnesota State (3-0-1, 1-0-1-1 WCHA) and Bemidji State (1-6-1, 1-2-1-1 WCHA) are tied with four points each, North Dakota (1-4-1, 1-4-1 WCHA) is seventh with three points, and St. Cloud State (1-5-0, 0-4-0 WCHA) is eighth.

Outside the WCHA on Oct. 23-24, Bemidji State dropped a pair of one-goal games out east against host Northeastern, losing 2-1 last Friday and 3-2 on Saturday. Minnesota State was idle this week.

Looking ahead to the new week of Oct. 26-Nov. 1, there will be three WCHA series on the docket as Wisconsin hosts Minnesota (Friday/Sunday) at Kohl Center, Ohio State welcomes Minnesota State (Friday/Saturday) to the OSU Ice Rink and St. Cloud State hosts North Dakota (Friday/Saturday) at the National Hockey Center. In non-conference play, Minnesota Duluth travels to Mercyhust (Friday/Saturday) in a series that will feature two of last season's NCAA Women's Frozen Four participants while Bemidji State entertains Wayne State (Friday/Saturday).
