MADISON, Wis. –Unbeaten and league-leading Minnesota used to back-to-back shutouts to run its winning streak to eight games last weekend with 4-0 and 7-0 victories over St. Cloud State and next the defending Western Collegiate Hockey Association regular season champions will be tested by defending national champion Wisconsin, in an important Halloween weekend series at Kohl Center in Madison. The series, to be played Friday (Oct. 30) and Sunday (Nov. 1) afternoons at 2:07 pm CT, is a rematch from last season’s WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF title game when the Badgers took a 5-3 decision to win the league’s playoff championship.
In the other two conference series to be played Friday and Saturday, Ohio State hosts Minnesota State, Mankato at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus while St. Cloud State entertains North Dakota at the National Hockey Center. In non-conference play, Minnesota Duluth travels to No. 1-ranked Mercyhust (Friday/Saturday) in a series that has two of last season’s NCAA Women's Frozen Four participants while Bemidji State entertains Wayne State (Friday/Saturday).
The No. 2-ranked Golden Gophers, who were led last weekend by the back-to-back shutouts of Noora Räty and Alyssa Grogan, have not allowed a goal in their last three games and are now 8-0-0 overall and 6-0-0 in the WCHA. They are in first place in the league race with a perfect 12 points while No. 5-ranked Minnesota Duluth (5-3-0, 4-2-0 WCHA) is second with eight points. Wisconsin needs a victory in this week’s Border Battle to keep Minnesota from running off to a commanding lead in the WCHA.
Last weekend, the Badgers split two WCHA home games with Ohio State. The Buckeyes snapped a 21-game winless streak against the Badgers and captured a 4-3 victory on freshman Hokey Langan’s game-winner last Friday (Oct. 23) before the Badgers rallied back to take a 5-3 decision on Saturday (Oct. 24). It was the first time OSU split a series at the Kohl Center since 2003.
The No.6-ranked Badgers (3-3-0, 3-3-0 WCHA) are currently in third place in the WCHA with six points while the Buckeyes (2-3-3, 2-3-1 WCHA) are fourth with five. Fifth place Minnesota State (3-0-1, 1-0-1-1 WCHA) and Bemidji State (1-6-1, 1-2-1-1 WCHA) are tied with four points each, North Dakota (1-4-1, 1-4-1 WCHA) is seventh with three points, and St. Cloud State (1-5-0, 0-4-0 WCHA) is eighth.
In other league series last weekend, Minnesota Duluth bested North Dakota, 4-1, last Friday as Emmanuelle Blais recorded her first collegiate three-goal hat trick, while senior blueliner Jaime Rasmussen and junior forward Laura Fridfinnson each had three assists and scored a 3-1 win last Saturday at the DECC.
In non-conference play Oct. 23-24, Bemidji State dropped a pair of one-goal games in Boston, losing 2-1 to Northeastern last Friday and 3-2 last Saturday. Minnesota State was idle.
