MADISON, Wis. - Defending national champion Wisconsin handed defending Western Collegiate Hockey Association champion Minnesota its first defeat of the 2009-10 season on Friday afternoon (Oct. 30) at Kohl Center, claiming a 4-2 victory. The Badgers, who owned a 43-28 advantage in shots on goal, received the game-winning goal from right winger Brooke Ammerman at 19:57 of the second period as the UW overcame a 2-1 deficit. Also for Wiconsin, forwards Geena Prough and Kelly Nash each had two assists, while in goal Becca Ruegsegger had 26 saves. For the visiting Golden Gophers, Sarah Erickson and Laura May scored goals while Noora Räty had 36 saves between the pipes.

In Columbus on Friday, the host Ohio State Buckeyes rallied for four goals in the third period, including two from forward Natalie Spooner in the final 2:02 to claim a 7-6 victory over Minnesota State, Mankato at the OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes also received two goals and two assists from winger Hokey Langan and three assists from center Laura McIntosh. For the Mavericks, who suffered their first defeat of the young season, Ashley Young (1g, 3a), Moira O'Connor (2g, 1a) and Lauren Smith (2g, 1a) led the way.

At the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud on Oct. 30, visiting North Dakota used a power-play goal from defenseman Kelly Lewis at 2:26 of overtime and two goals and three assists from winger Alyssa Wiebe to prevail 5-4 over the host SCSU Huskies. For St. Cloud State, winger Meaghan Pezon had two goals and two assists. At Bemidji State on Friday, the host Beavers scored three times in the second period, with left winger Erin Johnson netting the eventual game-winner on a power-play at 11:58, enroute to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Wayne State at John Glas Fieldhouse. Also for BSU, Zuzana Tomcikova had 31 saves in nets.

And out east on Friday, visiting Minnesota Duluth fell 5-2 to Mercyhurst in a game that featured 27 power-plays (UMD 0-of-13, MU 3-of-14). The Bulldogs led 2-1 in the second period after first period tallies by Tara Gray and Laura Fridfinnson.

On Halloween Saturday (Oct. 31), WCHA games have North Dakota at St. Cloud State and Minnesota State at Ohio State. The Wisconsin vs Minnesota series will conclude on Sunday afternoon in Madison. In non-conference play, Bemidji State again hosts Wayne State while UMD is again at Mercyhurst.
