MADISON, Wis. – The Ohio State Buckeyes completed a two-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association series sweep over visiting Minnesota State, Mankato over the Halloween weekend, enabling the Buckeyes to gain four points and move up in the league standings. After a 7-6 win over the Mavericks on Friday night, Ohio State came back with a 4-1 triumph over MSU to move to 4-3-3 overall and 4-3-1 in the WCHA, good for nine points and second place pending Sunday’s game.
In two other league series contested over the weekend, St. Cloud State battled back against North Dakota to claim a 3-2 victory on Saturday and their first WCHA win of the 2009-10 season. UND won on Friday by a 5-4 (ot) count. Wisconsin, meanwhile, will host Minnesota at 2:07 pm CT on Sunday (Nov. 1) in their second game of the series.
The defending NCAA champion Badgers earned a 4-2 victory over the defending WCHA champion Golden Gophers on Friday, handing UM its first loss of the campaign.
And in non-conference play, Minnesota Duluth gained a split in their two-game set at top-ranked Mercyhurst with a 4-3 verdict on Saturday while host Bemidji State fell 6-1 to Wayne State. On Friday, UMD was upended 5-2 while the Beavers prevailed 3-1.
At the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus on Saturday evening, forwards Jenna Kilpatrick, Laura McIntosh and Hokey Langan each had a goal and an assist while forward Natalie Spooner contributed three assists as host Ohio State completed a WCHA weekend sweep of Minnesota State with a 4-1 win. Scoring the game-winner for the Buckeyes was defenseman Brittany Carlson at 17:50 of the first period. For MSU, winger Lisa Edman had the lone goal.
At the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud on Oct. 31, left winger Felicia Nelson’s second goal of the game, coming at 12:29 of the third period, propelled St. Cloud State to a 3-2 win over North Dakota and to their first league win of the season. Also for SCSU, center Caitlin Hogan (1g, 1a) and winger Meaghan Pezon (2a) had multiple-point games. For the Sioux, center Ashley Furia and defenseman Jordan Slavin scored the goals.
At Mercyhurst on Saturday, right winger Emmanuelle Blais scored the game-winning goal and added two assists while Jennifer Harss made 41 saves between the pipes to help visiting Minnesota Duluth to a 4-3 win and a split of their non-conference series with the nation’s No. 1-ranked team. Also for the Bulldogs, wingers Laura Fridfinnson and Audrey Cournoyer each had a goal and an assist.
And at Bemidji on Oct. 31, host Bemidji State dropped a 6-1 decision to Wayne State, despite outshooting their guests, 32-24. Scoring for the Beavers was center Frances Door, whose first period tally tied the score at 1-1.
