MADISON, Wis. - In what may have been the most competitive weekend of play in the three-year history of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, five of six contests were decided by one goal. Despite the close scores, the same three teams were victorious both nights during the weekend.
Minnesota took over first place with a pair of wins over Ohio State. The Golden Gophers claimed wins at home, edging the Buckeyes, 2-1 and 3-2. The Gophers used a last minute goal in the 3-2 win for the series sweep.
Bemidji State had what turned out to be the easiest time of anyone this weekend. The Beavers swept Minnesota State, 4-1 and 4-3 on the road. The wins moved BSU into second place with eight points.
In a battle of previously unbeaten teams, Minnesota-Duluth escaped with four points. The Bulldogs blanked the Badgers 1-0 and took a 2-1 overtime victory to earn the sweep.
Three more league series are on the schedule this week as Minnesota State looks for its first league win of the season at Wisconsin, Bemidji State visits Minnesota to compete for first place and St. Cloud State travels to Ohio State with both teams looking to climb into the race for the league lead.
