St. Cloud, Minn. -The St. Cloud State University women's hockey coaching staff has announced the signing of Ashley Nixon (Blaine High School), Diana Karouzos (Colorado Selects), and Maggie Mickelson (Black River Falls High School) to National Letters of Intent during the 2006 early signing period.

Ashley Nixon is a senior goaltender from Blaine. A two-time All-Conference player, Nixon was the top-ranked goaltender in the USA Camps in 2006 after posting a .970 save percentage and giving up just two goals in Lake Placid, N.Y. In 2005, Nixon was named her team's Rookie of the Year after helping lead the Blaine Bengals to a conference championship. A 2006 team MVP choice, Nixon has also lettered in tennis at Blaine High School. The daughter of Scott and Mary Nixon, Ashley's older sister Sammy is currently a sophomore forward on the Husky roster in 2006.

"We couldn¹t be happier to be adding Ashley (Nixon) to the team," said SCSU's head coach Jeff Giesen. "As one of the top goaltenders in the country, Nixon will give us a solid, young goaltender to build around."

Maggie Mickelson is a senior defender and two-time letter winner for the Black River Falls Boys' High School team. The daughter of Steve and Roxanne of Hixton, Wisc., Mickelson has been a member of the Wisconsin Wild AAA Hockey team since 2002, and has notched State Championships in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006 with the Wisconsin Wild. The past three summers, Mickelson has been invited to the USA Development Camps in Lake Placid, N.Y. (2004, 2005, 2006). A team captain and all-conference pick in softball and volleyball, Mickelson is coached by Tony Rieck.

"Maggie (Mickelson) is a very competitive player with great foot work," said Giesen. "She will bring physical play to our blue line and is a versatile player that can also play forward."

Diana Karouzos is a senior defender from Chicago, Illinois. An all-state player and team co-captain, Karouzos has lettered three times for the Lane Tech High School Indians and is coached by her father, Dean Karouzos. Since 2004, Karouzos has tallied 29 goals and 38 assists in her prep career. Karouzos is currently a member of the 2006-07 Colorado Selects Team. She is also a three-time Chicago Showcase participant, has participated in the USA National Championships the past two seasons and was selected to participate in the USA Players Development camps in Lake Placid, N.Y., the past four years. Karouzoshas played onTeam Illinois, scoring 14 goals and 31 assists from 2004-2006, and has lettered twice in prep softball. An honors student at Lane Tech and the daughter of Dean and Nadine Karouzos, Diana plans to pursue a business and marketing degree at St. Cloud State University.

"Diana (Karouzos) is a great skater who sees the ice well and has great puck handling skills," said Giesen. "She will be a solid addition to our blue line and will be a great student-athlete for the University."

St. Cloud State University (5-6-1, 2-6-0 WCHA), under the helm of first year head coach Jeff Giesen, is coming off its most successful season in school history in 2005-06. Last year, the Huskies posted an 18-18-1 overall record, which marked the most wins in a single season at SCSU.

"Overall, our coaching staff is extremely excited about our early signers," said Giesen. "Each player brings unique qualities to our squad and the individual pieces from Nixon, Mickelson and Karouzos will help work towards completing the puzzle for successful Husky Hockey."
