MADISON, Wis. – Bemidji State, on the heels of a four-point series at Minnesota State, Mankato last weekend, will try to build on that momentum when they host another in-state rival, St. Cloud State, at John Glas Fieldhouse in one of three women’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association series scheduled for this weekend, Friday, Nov. 13 and Saturday, Nov. 14.
The Beavers received 50 saves in two nights from sophomore goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova and moved into fifth place with a 3-2 shootout win at Minnesota State last Friday and a 3-1 victory last Saturday in action Nov. 6-7.
This week’s play kicks off with a rare Thursday-Friday series when Wisconsin hosts Wayne State in non-conference play on Nov. 12-13 at the Kohl Center. The games conclude an eight-game homestand for the defending national champion Badgers.
All three WCHA series this week will be Friday-Saturday games as Minnesota Duluth wraps up a season-high six-game road swing with two games at Ohio State at the OSU Ice Rink and Minnesota goes to Minnesota State and All Seasons Arena in addition to the St.Cloud State-Bemidji matchup.
Roughly a third of the way into 2009-10 conference play, just two points separate the top four teams in the standings. Defending WCHA champion and No. 4-ranked Minnesota (8-2-0, 6-2-0 WCHA), idle last week, holds first place with 12 points, Ohio State (5-4-3, 5-4-1 WCHA) is second with 11, Minnesota Duluth (7-5-0, 5-3-0 WCHA) and Wisconsin (6-4-0, 5-3-0 WCHA) share third place with 10 points apiece and Bemidji State (3-7-2, 2-2-2-2 WCHA) is fifth with eight points. North Dakota (3-6-1, 3-6-1 WCHA), idle this week, is in sixth place with seven points, followed by Minnesota State (3-3-2, 1-3-2-1 WCHA) in seventh with five points and St. Cloud State (3-7-0, 2-6-0 WCHA) in eighth with four points.
Ohio State has made its move up the conference standings by winning five of its last seven games. Center Natalie Spooner’s power-play goal was the game-winner in a 3-1 win over North Dakota last Saturday at Grand Forks, N.D., after the Buckeyes lost 5-4 to the host Sioux last Friday. Buckeyes’ winger Raelyn LaRocque had a hand in five of OSU‘s seven goals on the weekend while freshman center Ashley Furia had a goal in each game for the Fighting Sioux and is UND‘s leading scorer after a three-point weekend.
Fifth-ranked Minnesota Duluth moved into a third place tie by using a 24-save performance from goaltender Jennifer Harss and blanking St. Cloud State, 5-0, on Nov. 7 in St. Cloud. The Bulldogs’ line of left winger Audrey Cournoyer (3a), center Katie Wilson (2g) and right winger Emmanuelle Blais (2a) accounted for seven points in gaining a split. St. Cloud State got 31 saves from goalie Ashley Nixon and senior Holly Roberts scored two goals in a 5-1 victory last Friday. The five goals were the most scored in a game this season by the Huskies.
No. 6-ranked Wisconsin, meanwhile, split two non-conference home games with Robert Morris, losing 3-1 last Friday and getting an overtime goal from Brooke Ammerman and taking the series finale, 3-2, last Saturday.
In this week’s USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Div. 1 national poll, Minnesota is ranked No. 3, Minnesota Duluth is No. 5 and Wisconsin is No. 6. Also receiving votes from the WCHA was Ohio State.
Looking ahead to next week, there are three conference series on the schedule for Nov. 20-22 as St. Cloud State hosts Wisconsin (Fri/Sat), Minnesota hosts Bemidji State (Fri/Sat), and Minnesota State visits Minnesota Duluth (Sat/Sun). In non-conference action, Ohio State will entertain St. Lawrence (Fri/Sat) while in exhibition play, North Dakota will host the Manitoba Maple Leafs (Sat).
