MADISON, Wis. – The Western Collegiate Hockey Association today announced the women’s players of the week for Nov. 11-17, 2009. They are Ohio State University forward Raelyn LaRocque on offense, Bemidji State University goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova on defense, and University of Minnesota Duluth forward Audrey Cournoyer as rookie.

WCHA Offensive Player of the Week

Raelyn LaRocque, Sr., F, Ohio State

Ohio State University co-captain Raelyn LaRocque, a senior forward from The Pas, Manitoba, factored into five of the Buckeyes’ seven goals in a two-game WCHA series split at North Dakota last weekend.

She had a career night last Friday (Nov. 6) with three points on a goal and two assists. After falling behind 2-1 in the first period LaRocque led a Buckeye charge that fell just short, setting up the second and third OSU goals and scoring the fourth in a 5-4 loss.

On Saturday (Nov. 7) night, LaRocque had an assist on Ohio State’s first goal. Then, with her team leading 2-1 in the second, she sealed the Buckeye win with her third goal of the season at the 10:24 mark.

In addition to her five points, LaRocque also earned a +5 plus/minus rating. She is now one point away from tying her career-high in season scoring. Her 10 assists are a career best and tie for first in the category overall in the WCHA. The games were her third and fourth multiple-point performances of the year and she has not been held without a point in any series this season.

Also nominated for the award this week were: Erin Johnson, F, BSU; Ashley Young, F, MSU; Alyssa Wiebe, F, UND; and Brooke Ammerman, F, UW.

WCHA Defensive Player of the Week

Zuzana Tomcikova, So., G, Bemidji State

Zuzana Tomcikova, a sophomore goaltender from Bratislava, Slovakia, stopped 50 of 53 shots on goal for a .943 series saves percentage as Bemidji State University took four points from WCHA-rival and host Minnesota State, Mankato last weekend.

In the series opener last Friday (Nov. 6) she made 20 stops to help send the 2-2 game into an overtime shootout, stopped two of the first three shooters to set up a sudden death situation in overtime, and went to stop nine of the next 10 shooters to help the Beavers gain an extra point.

Then last Saturday (Nov. 7), Tomcikova made another 30 saves, including 15 in the second period, as Bemidji State won 3-1 over Minnesota State. In addition to her 50 saves in the series, she also posted four shutout periods, including one in overtime.

On the 2009-10 season, Tomcikova owns a 2.24 goals-against average and .929 saves percentage over 482:23 of action along with a 3-4-1 record.

Also nominated for the award this week were: Alli Altmann, G, MSU; Candace Molle, D, UND; Ashley Nixon, G, SCSU; and Stefanie McKeough, D, UW.

WCHA Rookie of the Week

Audrey Cournoyer, Fr., F, Minnesota Duluth

Minnesota Duluth‘s Audrey Cournoyer, a freshman from Montreal, Quebec, picked up four assists as the No. 5-ranked Bulldogs split two WCHA games at St. Cloud State last weekend.

Cournoyer had an assist on the only UMD goal in last Friday’s (Nov. 6) 5-1 loss to the host Huskies and then had a helping hand in each of the Bulldogs’ first three goals last Saturday (Nov. 7) – including teammate Laura Fridfinnson’s eventual game-winner, as UMD bounced back with a 5-0 victory over the Huskies.

Cournoyer had a +4 plus/minus rating in last Saturday’s game and a +3 overall in the series. She is UMD’s fifth leading scorer this season with eight points (2g, 6a) in her first 12 games.

Also nominated for the award this week were: Erika Wheelhouse, D, BSU; Lauren Smith, F, MSU; Ashley Furia, F, UND; Hokey Langan, F, OSU.
