Mankato, Minn. - Minnesota State head women's hockey coach Jeff Vizenor announced on Nov. 12, 2008 the signing of two players from Minnesota. Erika Magnusson (Fergus Falls, Minn.) and Lauren Zrust (Blaine, Minn.) have signed NCAA Letters of Intent to play at MSU, beginning in the 2009-10 season.

All signings are contingent upon admission to MSU and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

"We are excited to add these two fine student-athletes to our team," Vizenor said. "We expect both to be immediate contributors on and off the ice for the Maverick hockey program."

Erika Magnusson, Forward/Defenseman, Shoots left, 5-5, DOB: 08/04/91, Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls High School Magnusson is a four-year starter and letter winner for the Otters, helping the team to a runner-up finish in the section playoffs the past two seasons...Was named all-conference her junior and sophomore seasons...Scored 11 goals and added eight assists as a team captain her junior season and scored 20 goals and 12 assists in 25 games her sophomore year...Was selected to the U-17 Minnesota team that participated in the National Development Program in Lake Placid, N.Y...Named Hardest Worker by her team her three years of high school and Most Valuable Player her junior and sophomore seasons...Voted Most Dedicated by her fellow skaters, following her sophomore year...Current Maverick assistant coach Mandy Krause-Rideout coached Magnusson her freshman season...Also a four-year starter on the soccer team and a three-year starter on the softball team...As a student, she has been on the A-honor roll all four years and is in the 4-H Club, Choir, Orchestra and Younglife...Her father, Mark, played hockey at the University of Minnesota, Crookston.

"Erika is a player that continues to get better every time we see her play," Vizenor said. "She has excellent work ethic and competes extremely hard."

Lauren Zrust, Forward, Shoots right, 5-6, DOB: 0/17/91, Blaine, Minn./Blaine High School Zrust is a four-year letter winner for the Bengals...At the end of her junior campaign she had 139 career points...During her junior season she earned all-state honorable mention, all-conference and third team all-metro...Named Offensive Most Valuable Player her last three seasons by her teammates and Team MVP her junior year...Led the Northwest Suburban Conference in scoring her sophomore year, earning NWSC All-conference honors...Was voted Rookie of the Year by her teammates...Named team captain her junior and senior seasons...A four-year stater and letter winning on the soccer team and also played lacrosse...A proposed physical therapy major...An A honor roll student and member of the captains club.

"Lauren is a natural goal scorer," Vizenor said. "She has good hockey sense and the ability to get herself and the puck to the net."

MSU hosts St. Cloud State this weekend in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association showdown at the Alltel Center. Both games are slated for a 2:07 p.m. start.
