MADISON, Wis. - The Western Collegiate Hockey Association today announced the women's players of the week for Dec. 16, 2009. They are University of Wisconsin forward Brooke Ammerman on offense, goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova of Bemidji State University on defense, and University of Minnesota defenseman Megan Bozek as rookie.
WCHA Offensive Player of the Week
Brooke Ammerman, So., F, Wisconsin
University of Wisconsin forward Brooke Ammerman, a sophomore from River Vale, N.J., had another impressive weekend, notching three scoring points in two WCHA road victories over Minnesota State, Mankato.
In last Friday's (Dec. 11) 3-0 win over the host Mavericks, Ammerman opened the game with Wisconsin's first two goals, marking her third multiple-goal game of the 2009-10 season. She also fired five shots on goal and was named the First Star of the Game. Ammerman has a team-leading 14 goals after the outing.
Ammerman then followed up with an assist on the eventual game-winning goal last Saturday (Dec. 12) in a 6-2 Wisconsin victory over Minnesota State which completed the two-game sweep for the Badgers.
Through 20 games played this season, Ammerman leads the Wisconsin team in scoring with 23 points on 14 goals and nine assists.
Also nominated for the award this week were: Erin Cody, F, BSU; Brittany Francis, F, UM; and Felicia Nelson, F, SCSU.
WCHA Defensive Player of the Week
Zuzana Tomcikova, So., G, Bemidji State
Bemidji State University goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova, a sophomore from Bratislava, Slovakia, made 82 saves in a two-game WCHA road series against the No. 5-ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs last weekend. Tomcikova also won the league's weekly defensive award on Oct. 14 and Nov. 11.
After giving up four goals on 40 shots last Saturday (Dec. 12) in a 4-1 loss to UMD, Tomcikova rebounded in a big way, posting a near career high 46 saves on 48 shots in a 2-2 overtime tie last Sunday (Dec. 13) in Duluth. In the ensuing shootout, she stopped all three Minnesota Duluth skaters and allowed Bemidji State to gain the extra point, 1-0, while earning First Star of the Game honors. She has now stopped 14 of 16 shootout attempts she has faced this season.
In the two-game weekend series, Tomcikova had double-digit save totals in all six 20:00 periods and held UMD to one power-play goal in seven opportunities. On the season, she owns a 6-8-2 overall record, a 2.24 goals-against average and a .933 saves percentage. She ranks second in the nation in total saves (498) and is 10th nationally in saves percentage (.933).

WCHA Rookie of the Week
Megan Bozek, Fr., D, Minnesota
Megan Bozek, a freshman defenseman from Buffalo Grove, Ill., scored two goals and assisted on another two to amass four points in the University of Minnesota's two-game WCHA series sweep over North Dakota last weekend. Bozek also won the weekly rookie award on Nov. 25.
Bozek scored two power-play goals in the Golden Gophers' 3-1 win over the host Fighting Sioux last Saturday (Dec. 12) in Grand Forks, N.D. One of her two tallies was the eventual game-winner, coming at 1:53 of the third period. After UND scored a 5-on-3 goal to close the gap to 2-1, Bozek responded with her second power-play goal of the game at 17:23 in the third.
Then last Sunday (Dec. 13), Bozek assisted on two other power-play goals to give her a series total of four points. She assisted on the game-winner and held the first assist on one of Brittany Francis' goals en route to a 5-0 win.
As a part of the Gopher defense, Bozek and the rest of the blueliners held North Dakota to just six shots on goal on Saturday and allowed just one goal in two games.
On the season, Bozek is tied for fourth in scoring among her UM teammates with15 points (3g, 12a) in 20 games.
