Quartet garners league recognition for month of December

sterlingBLOOMINGTON, Minn. – January 1, 2021 – The Women's League of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association is proud to honor four student-athletes as the WCHA Players of the Month presented by Sterling Trophy after their excellent on-ice performances during the month of December. Minnesota Duluth's duo of senior Anna Klein (Forward) and junior Emma Söderberg (Goaltender) collect the final monthly honors of 2020 alongside the Minnesota State pair of junior Anna Wilgren (Defenseman) and freshman forward Jamie Nelson (Rookie).

WCHA Forward of the Month

player Anna Klein, Sr., Minnesota Duluth (Edina, Minn.)

Minnesota Duluth's Anna Klein posted the second most points per game in the nation and the league in December with 2.50 P/GP. Klein led the NCAA and WCHA with two game-winning goals and tied for the lead in the WCHA with two goals and three assists in December. The senior forward also boasts a +4 rating, which tied her for second in the WCHA. Klein continues to lead the NCAA and WCHA in overall scoring with 11 points, as well as in goals (six), despite having played only six games. This is Klein's first career WCHA Forward of the Month honor.

Honorable Mention: Clair DeGeorge, Sr., Bemidji State: Tied for the WCHA lead in points with five and tied for the league lead in goals with three. Grace Zumwinkle, Sr., Minnesota: Scored two goals in Minnesota's lone series in December 2020, a home-and-home sweep over Minnesota State. Brittyn Fleming, Sr., Minnesota State: Recorded a three-game point streak with goals at Minnesota on Dec. 11 and Dec. 17 vs Bemidji State. Jenniina Nylund, Jr., St. Cloud State: Led St. Cloud State to a 1-3-0 record in December while helping the program match their 2019-20 season WCHA win total just six games into the season.

WCHA Defenseman of the Month

player Anna Wilgren, Jr., Minnesota State (Hudson, Wis.)

Minnesota State's Anna Wilgren recorded one goal and two assists for three points in the month of December. The Hudson, Wis., native also registered 11 shots on goal as well as 13 blocked shots. Had a three-point night to help lead MSU's 5-3 win over BSU on Dec. 18 and sealed the deal with a length-of-the-ice empty-net goal. The junior blueliner leads the WCHA in blocked shots (21) and her two power-play assists are tied for the league-high so far this season. This is Wilgren's third career WCHA Defenseman of the Month honor.

Honorable Mention: Tina Kampa, Sr., Bemidji State: Led all WCHA skaters with four assists during the month of December and led all WCHA blueliners with four points. Crystalyn Hengler, Jr., Minnesota: Led WCHA defensemen with 1.50 assists per game and 1.50 points per game during December.

WCHA Goaltender of the Month

player Emma Söderberg, Jr., Minnesota Duluth (Järved, Sweden)

Minnesota Duluth's Emma Söderberg was the only goaltender in the WCHA to pick up two wins in December, as well as the only netminder to earn a shutout. The Järved, Sweden native did not allow a goal in 100 minutes of action, another league-best for the month. The junior goaltender posted an NCAA and WCHA-low GAA of 0.00 and a perfect 1.000 save percentage. This is Söderberg's first career WCHA Goaltender of the Month honor.

Honorable Mention: Kerigan Dowhy, Sr., Bemidji State: Posted a 1-2-1 record with a 2.67 goals against average and .902 save percentage in the month of December. Lauren Bench, RS-Sr., Minnesota: Made 40 saves on 41 shots faced in a road win over Minnesota State in her lone appearance of the month of December as the Gophers won 5-1 over the Mavericks. Lauren Barbro, Fr., Minnesota State: Earned first career win, 5-3, over Bemidji State with 14 saves on Dec. 18.

WCHA Rookie of the Month

player Jamie Nelson, Fr., F, Minnesota State (Andover, Minn.)

Minnesota State's Jamie Nelson currently stands as the Mavericks' team leader in points with seven on four goals and three assists this season. The league newcomer notched MSU's game-tying goal Dec. 17 vs. BSU unassisted to send the Mavericks into overtime. The Andover, Minn., native led all WCHA rookies in scoring in December with four points on two goals and two assists. The freshman forward also topped all league freshmen in assists (two) and blocked shots (five) during the month and finished second in shots on goal with 11. This marks the first WCHA Monthly honor of Nelson's career.

Honorable Mention: Audrey Wethington, Fr., F, Minnesota: Recorded her first two collegiate points in Minnesota lone series of December 2020, a home-and-home sweep over Minnesota State. Clara Van Wieren, Fr., F, Minnesota Duluth: Led all WCHA rookies with three goals and a plus/minus rating of +4 in December and also leads all freshmen with a 1.50 goals and points per game average for the month.
