Minnesota's Hannah Brandt named WCHA Player of the Year

MADISON, Wis. – For the second straight season, the University of Minnesota dominated the regular season and the two-time defending national champions once again are the big winners in the 2013-14 post-season women's honors. The awards were announced by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association today at a league awards ceremony held in Bemidji, Minn., in conjunction with the WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF tournament championship.

Minnesota, the WCHA regular season champion, placed four players on the All-WCHA First Team as selected by coaches and team captains and the Gophers also had players who were named WCHA Player of the Year, WCHA Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year, WCHA Defensive Player of the Year and WCHA Rookie of the Year.

Minnesota's Hannah Brandt, a sophomore forward rom Vadnais Heights, Minn. who scored 14 goals and 26 assists for 40 points in 28 conference games, was named the WCHA Player of the Year. Brandt, the league leader in assists and total points and the conference scoring champion, was also one of three WCHA players named as top 10 finalists for the 2014 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, given annually to the top collegiate player. Earlier today (March 6), she was also named one of three finalists for the Kazmaier, an award won last year by Minnesota's Amanda Kessel, the 2013 WCHA Player of the Year

Brandt is the only repeat member of the All-WCHA First Team. She is joined at forward by teammate Kelly Terry, a senior from Whitby, Ont., who had 13 goals and 36 points in league play, and the University of North Dakota's Michelle Karvinen a senior from Rodovre, Denmark, who played for Team Finland and was named the outstanding forward at the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Karvinen compiled 12 goals, seven assists and 19 points in 18 league games.

Terry was also honored as the WCHA Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year. She is a forward who scored over 30 points in each of her four seasons at Minnesota. Terry has a grade-point average of 3.42 (4.0 scale), majoring in Biology, and intends to go to medical school in hopes of becoming a doctor. She is a four-time University of Minnesota Scholar-Athlete and a WCHA Scholar-Athlete in 2013 and 2014. She is also an All-WCHA All-Academic Team honoree in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

The All-WCHA First Team for 2013-14 also includes Minnesota defensemen Rachel Ramsey, a junior defenseman from Chanhassen, Minn., and Milica McMillen, a sophomore from St. Paul, Minn. Ramsey had six goals, 24 assists and 30 points in league play while McMillen scored eight goals and added 18 assists for 26 points. The All-WCHA First Team goaltender is the University of Wisconsin's Alex Rigsby, a senior from Delafield, Wis., who has 99 career victories, a 1.29 goals-against average in conference play and a .947 conference saves percentage. Rigsby was a second-team all-WCHA goalie last season.

Ramsey was also honored as the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year in a vote of the league's head coaches.

The WCHA Coach of the Year Award for 2013-14 went to Minnesota's Brad Frost, who led the Gophers to a 26-1-1 conference record and to the regular season title. Minnesota enters the 2014 WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF on a 22-game unbeaten streak (21-0-1) and is 83-1-1 since Feb. 18, 2012. Frost's team is the two-time defending NCAA champion and has won two WCHA titles in a row. This marks the fourth time Frost has been named the league's coach of the year, with his first honor coming in 2007-08 and the second in 2008-09 when he was co-coach of the year (with Wisconsin's Mark Johnson). He also won the award last season when his team had the only perfect season in women's college hockey history.

Rachael Bona, who is also a finalist for the Kazmaier Award, leads the All-WCHA Second Team. The second team includes Bona's Minnesota teammate Sarah Davis, a senior from Paradise, Newfoundland who had 15 goals 21 assists and 36 points, and Wisconsin forward Brittany Ammerman, a junior from River Vale, N.J. who also is a finalist for the Kazmaier Award. Ammerman led the league in goals with 20 and had 34 points while Bona had 15 goals and 38 points. The defensemen are Courtney Burke, Wisconsin's sophomore from Albany, N.Y., and Ohio State junior Kari Schmitt, from Canton, Mich. Burke had three goals, 18 assists and 21 points while Schmitt scored four goals and 15 points. Minnesota's Amanda Leveille, a sophomore from Kingston, Ont., is the all-league's second team goaltender. Leveille, who was 26-1-1 in conference play, had a 1.03 goals-against average and a .953 save percentage.

The All-WCHA Third Team for 2013-14 features Minnesota State goaltender Danielle Butters, a senior from London, Ont. who had a 3.35 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage. The forwards are Minnesota Duluth's Jenna McParland, a junior from Screiber, Ont. who scored seven goals, 18 assists and 25 points, Wisconsin's Blayre Turnbull, a junior forward from Stellarton, Nova Scotia who scored 15 goals, had 17 assists and 32 points, and North Dakota forward Josefine Jakobsen, a junior from Aalborg, Denmark who had 10 goals, 14 assists and 24 points. The defensemen are Ohio State Sara Schmitt, a junior from Canton, Mich. who had six goals, 13 assists and 19 points and Minnesota Duluth freshman Lara Stalder of Lucerne, Switzerland who scored three goals and 14 points. Stalder also won a bronze medal in the Olympics with Team Switzerland.

Minnesota forward Dani Cameranesi, who was the top scoring freshman in the WCHA this season with 14 goals, 10 assists and 24 points, was named the WCHA Rookie of the Year and joins Stalder on the All-WCHA Rookie Team with North Dakota defenseman Gracen Hirschy, UND forward Susanna Tapani, Wisconsin forward Sarah Nurse and goaltenders Brittni Mowat of Bemidji State and Ann-Renée Desbiens of Wisconsin, who each received the same number of votes. Desbiens, who was 9-1-0 in league action, had a 0.97 goals-against average and earned her the WCHA goaltending champion award. She also owned the top save percentage in WCHA play at .961.

Conference member-team head coaches, assistant coaches and team captains vote for the WCHA individual award winners. The WCHA Defensive Player of the Year Award is chosen by the head coaches, while the WCHA Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year is selected by the institutional faculty representatives.

The conference also today released the 2013-14 All-WCHA Academic Team, comprised of 91 student-athletes representing all eight WCHA women's-member institutions.
