WCHA Offensive Player of the Week

photoHilary Knight led host Wisconsin with six points on four goals and two assists in its season-opening 7-0, 6-0 series sweep against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute last weekend at the Kohl Center.

A junior forward, Knight had a five-point game last Saturday (Oct. 2) in a 6-0 victory, tallying a natural hat trick to start the game before finishing the evening with two assists. The Sun Valley, Idaho, native struck first just :33 seconds into the game, netting the eventual game-winning goal. Knight notched her second goal of the night at the 7:48 mark of the first period and completed the natural hat trick at the 13:08 mark of the second period. Knight's shot from high in the slot gave UW the 3-0 lead and completed her second natural hat trick as a Badger. The three-goal effort marked Knight's third career hat trick for UW.

Knight also had a plus-five rating in two games and her nine shots are a team best, along with her .444 shot percentage. Knight leads the nation with 2.00 goals per game and is tied for third in the country with 3.00 points per game.

WCHA Defensive Player of the Week
Zuzana Tomcikova - Jr., G

photoReturning to the ice after a tremendous sophomore season, goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova lived up to her title of 2009-10 WCHA Co-Player of the Year while helping visiting Bemidji State blank the Wayne State Warriors 3-0 in their season opener last Friday (Oct. 1) night.

Setting the tone early, Tomcikova's first save of the game came off a Wayne State breakaway. The junior from Bratislava, Slovakia would go on to stop all 27 shots on goal in the game, including 12 in the third period. She was named the First Star of the Game and the shutout marked the ninth of her collegiate career.

Also nominated for the award were: Noora Räty, G, UM; Kelsey Ketcher, D, UND; and Saige Pacholok, D, UW.

WCHA Rookie of the Week
Amanda Kessel - Fr., F
University of Minnesota

photoIn her opening weekend of collegiate play, University of Minnesota rookie forward Amanda Kessel netted three goals and assisted on another three to put up six points against then No. 7-ranked Clarkson.

In her first game as a Golden Gopher last Friday (Oct. 1), Kessel tallied four points. Scoring two goals en route to a 5-0 win, Kessel also set up Jen Schoullis' power-play, game-winning goal. Then on Saturday (Oct. 2), Kessel scored the game-winning goal to lead the Gophers to a 3-0 victory. Kessel also tallied another assist on Megan Bozek's power-play goal Saturday for a six-point weekend. The freshman from Madison, Wis., had 13 shots and was a +4 in her Gopher debut.

Also nominated for the award this week were: Alex Ehlert, D, BSU; and Brittany Ammerman, F, UW.
