ST. CLOUD STATE DEFEATED BY MERCYHURST, 8-1

Junior Brittany Toor scored a goal for the Huskies

St. Cloud, Minn. - In the second game of the 2011 Easton Holiday Showcase on Saturday, Jan. 1, the #4/5-ranked Mercyhurst Lakers (14-3-0, 5-0-0 CHA) cruised past the St. Cloud State women's hockey team (0-17-1, 0-13-1-1 WCHA) by a score of 8-1 in the National Hockey Center.

Led by Jesse Scanzano, the Lakers rattled off three goals in the initial period and never looked back, out-shooting the Huskies 50-21 in the contest and rolling to the 8-1 non-conference victory.

St. Cloud State's lone tally of the game came at the 8:40 mark of the second period when junior alternate captain Brittany Toor (Hartland, Mich.) came storming down the slot to beat Mercyhurst's goalie Hillary Pattenden stick side for her fourth score of the season. Toor's goal, which was assisted by rookie Michelle Burke (London, Ontario), cut the Laker lead to 3-1 at the time.

Mercyhurst's offensive attack proved to be too much in the final frame as the Lakers posted five more goals before the final buzzer. Scanzano led all players with a natural hat trick. She also added an assist in the win. Meghan Agosta earned the game's second star honors after dishing out five helpers in the stint.

The Lakers' power-play was in sync this afternoon, both offensively and defensively, as Mercyhurst connected on 4-of-8 power play opportunities and held St. Cloud State's extra skater advantage to 0-of-4.

Pattenden earned the win between the pipes for the Lakers, backstopping her squad with 18 saves in 51:47 minutes of ice time. Ashley Nixon (Blaine), SCSU's senior netminder, fell to 0-14-1 on the season after carding 42 saves in 60:00.
