Erie, Pa. - St. Cloud State (0-2-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) women's hockey dropped its season opening series to No. 3-ranked Mercyhurst College with a 6-1 loss on Saturday, Oct. 2, in the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Sophomore forward Kylie Lane (Roseau) charted her first point of the season with the Huskies lone goal of the contest. Lane, who was assisted by rookie Amy Olson (Roseau), found the back of the Lakers net at 16:38 of the second period to prevent the Mercyhurst shutout.
Tayler VanDenakker (Winnipeg, Manitoba) earned her first start this season between the pipes for the Huskies. The junior netminder played all but four seconds in the game, totaling 30 saves and giving up six goals.
Mercyhurst out-shot the Huskies 36-20 and both teams were held scoreless on the power play. The Lakers now hold a 7-1-1 advantage over SCSU in the all-time series, dating back to December 15, 2001.
St. Cloud State will return home for a non-conference game against Wayne State (Mich.) on Friday, Oct. 8, in the National Hockey Center. Game time is slated for 7:07 pm.
