LATE BARNES GOAL LIFTS MINNESOTA STATE PAST LINDENWOOD, 4-3
Sophomore Lauren Barnes pots game-winner with 1:49 remaining for Mavericks

Kathleen Rogan picked up a goal for the Mavericks

Mankato, Minn.- The Minnesota State Maverick women's hockey team opened the season as Lauren Barnes scored the game-winning goal in her first game at MSU as they played host to the Lindenwood University Lions in a 4-3 win at All Season's Arena on Friday night.

MSU opened the game with multiple chances to score during the first period. The Mavericks set the tone for the rest of the game as MSU had 14 shots on goal in the first period.

During the second period the sophomore forward Kathleen Rogan scored after she cut in from the bottom of the circle to be the goalie one-on-one. Senior forward Emmi Leinonen earned the assist on the goal. Lindenwood evened the score as forward Kendra Broad scored an unassisted goal with 5:24 left in the period.

Heading into the third period with a 2-1 lead, MSU scored as junior Lauren Smith deflected the puck into the net for the Mavericks. Lindenwood then answered with two goals of its own as Kelsey Talbot scored on a power-play goal and Alison Wickenheiser scored on a deflection. But that wouldn't stop the Mavericks as sophomore Lauren Barnes scored her first goal as a Maverick on a breakaway with 1:49 left in regulation, which sealed the deal as the Mavericks defeated the Lions.

Minnesota State outshot Lindenwood 53-16 in the game as MSU rattled 25 shot in the second period alone. MSU's Rogan finished with 11 shots herself.

The Mavericks (1-0-1) will see if they can sweep the Lions (0-3-0) as the Mavericks and Lions will square-off once again tomorrow in All Seasons Arena at 3:07p.m.
