GRAND FORKS, N.D. --- The No. 6 University of North Dakota women's hockey team tied WCHA rival the University of Wisconsin 4-4 and came away with the shoot-out victory Sunday afternoon at the Ralph Engelstad arena.
The shootout victory was the first in program history since the Western Collegiate Hockey Association adopted it in 2008-09 to settle ties after a 5-minute overtime with an extra point in the standings.
With the two points, UND leapfrogs Minnesota Duluth back into third place in the league standings with 30 points and an overall 13-8-2 record. No. 2 Wisconsin falls to 20-2-2 overall and 14-2-2-1 in the WCHA.
North Dakota faced a lot of demons in the game, not only winning its first shootout, but also battled back from a 2-goal deficit twice in the game.
UND's Jorid Dagfinrud started today's game in hopes of a new outcome, though things didn't get off to a positive start right away as Carolyne Prevost scored the first goal of her hat-trick performance just 42 seconds into the opening frame. At 18:36 of the first period Wisconsin's Brianna Decker was whistled for checking from behind resulting in a five minute major and a game misconduct, giving UND a five minute power-play to finish out the first period and start the second period.
Roughly fifteen seconds into the second period there was a power outage at the rink which sent both teams back to their locker rooms for an extra few minutes. UND was unable to capitalize on the five minute major. Wisconsin's Prevost added another goal at 8:22 in the frame putting the Badgers up 2-0. UND's Monique Lamoureux-Kolls would score on the power play at 13:26 to put UND within one heading into the third period.
UND had a good start to what turned out to be a very entertaining third period full of penalties and goals. They tied it up at 3:26 into the third frame as Monique Lamoureux-Kolls scored her second goal of the night, short-handed. Wisconsin's Prevost scored her third goal of the game on the power-play to put the Badgers up 3-2. Shortly after, Badger's Senior Brooke Ammerman scored another power-play goal to give them a two goal lead over UND at the 9:05 mark of the final stanza. Just 45 seconds later, UND's Michelle Karvinen snagged the game's seventh goal to put UND within one. The Badgers took a number of penalties during the remainder of the third period giving UND plenty of chances to tie it up. With Dagfinrud out of the net and a player in the box for Wisconsin, UND's Andrea Dalen scored her eighth goal of the season at 19:28 of the third period to tie the game with a score of 4-4.
There were no goals scored in the five minute overtime, resulting in a shoot-out.
