COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's hockey team fell to No. 1 Wisconsin Friday in a hard-fought 3-1 game at the OSU Ice Rink. The Badgers scored two goals in the final eight minutes to take the win and improve to 10-1-0 overall (6-1-0 WCHA), while the loss dropped the Buckeyes to 5-3-1 overall (5-3-1-1 WCHA).
Wisconsin edged Ohio State in shots, 32-26 and in faceoffs, 30-25. Badger goalie Alex Rigsby totaled 25 saves, while Ohio State's Lisa Steffes finished with 29 stoppers.
The Badgers struck first with a short-handed goal at 7:41 in the opening period. Blayre Turnbull capitalized on a Buckeye turnover in the Wisconsin attack zone and slipped a shot past Steffes for the unassisted score.
Ohio State locked the score at 1-1 at 5:54 in the second as freshman Kayla Sullivan tapped in a shot in the crease for her second goal of the season. Assisting the Flower Mound, Texas, native was fellow freshmen Taylor Kuehl and Danielle Gagne. The helper was the sixth for Kuehl and second for Gagne this year.
The two squads battled an even 22 minutes of play before the Badgers broke the tie at 12:10 in the third. Hilary Knight scored an even-strength goal with assists to Brianna Decker and Brooke Ammerman. Wisconsin solidified the win with another goal at 15:37 when Karley Sylvester scored on an assist from Decker.
The Buckeyes and the Badgers conclude the two-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association series Saturday with a 7 p.m. game at the OSU Ice Rink.
