Haylea Schmid picked up a goal for the Huskies

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Huskies fell in their season opener Friday afternoon by a score of 2-1 to Syracuse. The game was played at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis as part of the East/West Showcase hosted by the University of Minnesota.

The scoring opened up late in the first period when Syracuse forward Sadie St. Germain found the back of the net at the 16:57 mark. Assists on the play were given to Allie LaCombe and Kaillie Goodnough. At the 18:52 mark of the first period Syracuse struck again. After originally being waived off by an official, a goal by Lisa Mullan was reviewed and determined good, putting the Orange up 2-0. Assists went to Cara Johnson and Shiann Darkangelo.

The Huskies played a strong second period, out shooting the Orange 16 to 7. At the 16:54 mark of the second, junior forward Haylea Schmid put in the Huskies first goal of the season and narrowed the score to 2-1. An assist on the SCSU goal was given to junior forward Alex Nelson.

The third period was largely controlled by the Huskies once again but they were unable to capitalize. SCSU out shot the Orange by a final count of 33 to 21.

SCSU (0-1-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) will be back in action tomorrow as the East/West Showcase continues. They will face Union in a game slated for 4 pm from Ridder Arena
