St. Cloud, Minn. - The St. Cloud State University women's hockey team held their final exhibition game of the season as they hosted the University of British Columbia at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Huskies prevailed shutting out the Thunderbirds by a final score of 3-0.
St. Cloud State and British Columbia battled hard in the first period as it was scoreless until the 17:25 mark when Julia Gilbert found an opening for a 1-0 lead. Freshman Kelsey Saelens and junior Audrey Hanmer were credited with the assists on the goal.
The Huskies came out in the second period making some great defensive stops and extended their lead, 2-0 at the 16:31 mark on a power-play goal by sophomore Vanessa Spataro. Spataro rebounded a shot to put the puck in the bottom right of the net for the score. Assists were charted to Hanmer and freshman Caroline Markstrom.
SCSU sealed their fate in the third period at the 15:15 mark with the one who started it all for the Huskies, Julia Gilbert. Gilbert made it a 3-0 game over British Columbia on a shorthanded goal with the assists going to Spataro and Markstrom.
The Huskies outshot the Thunderbirds by a final margin of 38 to 25.
St. Cloud and British Columbia also competed in a shootout where the teams went four rounds with the Huskies winning 2-1. Junior Amanda Arbogast and senior Michelle Burke both scored goals in the shootout for the Huskies.
Sharing the net for the Huskies was sophomore Katie Fitzgerald and junior Julie Friend. Fitzgerald earned the start recording 15 saves and the win, while Friend tallied 10 saves in the game.
St. Cloud State will be back in action on October 4-5 as they kick off the regular season hosting Quinnipiac University for a two game series in the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Game times are slated for 7:07 p.m. and 3:07 p.m. respectively.
