BEMIDJI STATE FALLS TO TEAM RUSSIA IN OVERTIME, 5-4, IN EXHIBITION ACTION

Junior forward Kristine Grenier had a goal and an assist for the Beavers

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -Tess Dusik (Sr., F, Oak Bluff, Manitoba), Allie Duellman (Sr., D, Maplewood, Minn.) and Kristine Grenier (Jr., F, St. Leon, Manitoba) each posted two points in the loss, while senior goaltender Jessica Havel (Grand Rapids, Minn.) stopped 29 shots in a losing effort.

BSU struck first 46 seconds into the contest with a Grenier goal. Including the goal, the two teams had an equal number of opportunities with 12 shots on net in the period, but after one period the score was still BSU 1-0.

Being down 1-0 after one period, the Russian National Team struck twice in the second period as it out-shot the Beavers 16-7 in the frame.

After a fairly quiet first two periods, the two squads erupted for five goals in the third and final period. BSU outshot Team Russia 12-four in the third. Three of those BSU shots found the back of the net with two of them being with a man advantage. The two power-play goals, which were scored by Dusik and Ivana Bilic (So., D, Coquitlam, British Columbia), tied a season high for the Beavers. Team Russia would not be quiet in the third period as it struck with two goals of its own despite having just four shots. With that those five goals, Bemidji State found itself in an unfamiliar situation as it played an overtime game for the first time this season.

In the extra period there were only two shots on net. Both of them were by Team Russia and one ended up being the game-winner with the final score being 5-4.

With the loss, the Beavers drop to 9-4-2 all-time in exhibition contests.

The Beavers return to conference play a week from Friday as it travels to Madison, Wis. to take on the current No. 2 team in the land University of Wisconsin for a two-game set. Puck drop is at 2 p.m. both days.
