St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State women's hockey rounded out their final non-conference series of the season against Rensselaer Saturday afternoon at Brooks Center. The Huskies comeback fell short though as Rensselaer earned the sweep with a 2-1 victory.
The first period was all RPI as the Huskies got into penalty trouble and the Engineers capitalized putting up two power-play goals by the halfway point of the first period to lead 2-0. Jordan Smelker scored the first goal for RPI at the 6:21 mark and was followed with a goal by Madison Marzario at the 10:18 mark for the two-point lead.
No scoring in the second period with both teams only recording one penalty each. St. Cloud was outshooting Rensselaer 21-12 after the second period.
The Huskies were able to start a comeback at the 4:54 mark of the third period as Molli Mott fired a shot from right in front of the net, scoring a shorthanded goal to make it a 2-1 game. Mott was assisted by senior teammates Julia Gilbert and Cari Coen.
St. Cloud had many other opportunities in the third period but was unable to get any past the RPI goalie as the Engineers came away with the 2-1 victory over the Huskies.
Earning the start in goal for St. Cloud was sophomore Katie Fitzgerald as she recorded 18 saves, while RPI's Kelly O'Brien tallied 31 for the win. Fitzgerald moves her record to 1-4-1 on the season. The Huskies finished the game outshooting RPI, 32-20.
St. Cloud State (2-11-3, 1-7-2-1 WCHA) will continue their home stint Dec. 6-7 as they play host to Minnesota State in the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Game times are slated for 7:07 p.m. and 3:07 p.m. respectively.
