St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State women's hockey was back in action after the holiday break hosting their final series of an eight game home stand Jan. 3-4. The Huskies welcomed No. 2 Wisconsin at Brooks Center Friday as they fell by a final score of 3-1.
In the first period it was Wisconsin controlling the game taking a 1-0 lead at the 9:42 mark with a goal by redshirt-junior Brittany Ammerman. An assist on the goal was charted to junior teammate Blayre Turnbull. The Badgers led the period in shots on goal eight to six over the Huskies.
The score would stay in favor of the Badgers 1-0 throughout the second period, as defenses on both ends of the ice were strong. Wisconsin put up 19 shots on goal while St. Cloud recorded nine.
Coming out in the third period Wisconsin would continue their first power-play opportunity that overlapped from the second period. Just seconds after the power-play opportunity ended, the Huskies' Julia Gilbert capitalized on a turnover down low tying the game up 1-1. Gilbert was unassisted on the goal, recording her sixth of the season.
The Badgers come back though to regain the lead 2-1 over St. Cloud at the 5:19 mark of the third as sophomore Rachel Jones scored from just right of the net for her first of the season. Wisconsin would seal their fate in the game as Katy Josephs recorded an empty-net goal at the 19:24 mark for a 3-1 victory over the Huskies.
Starting in goal for St. Cloud was junior Julie Friend posting 37 saves, while UW's Ann-Renee Desbiens tallied 22 for the win. Friend now sees her record move to 2-9-2 on the season.
The Huskies penalty kill was notable as always holding the Badgers to a zero-for-three power-play while they went zero-for-one on the night.
