BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) - The Bemidji State University women's ice hockey team completed its first sweep over University of North Dakota since 2007 today at Sanford Center, 2-1. With the victory, BSU improves to 7-4-1 overall and 3-4-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play, while North Dakota falls to 4-7-1 overall and 3-6-1 in conference action.
After a scoreless first period, the Beavers notched a pair of goals in the second. Kristin Huber got things started with a rebounded Madison Hutchinson shot at 5:35 in the second to give the Beavers the game's first lead.
Fellow junior Hanna Moher followed up with her own goal after a commotion around the net allowed her to sneak one past UND's goaltender Lexie Shaw at 11:51 in the second period.
The score remained 2-0 going into the third period. North Dakota seemed to come out in the third with renewed jump. The Beavers matched the extra aggressiveness but sometimes went too far as there were 11 penalties called in the period compared to just one through the first two.
UND was able to finally break through Bemidji State's defense as Tanja Eisenschmid netted her third goal of the season to close the gap to 2-1 with just under six minutes left to play.
North Dakota nearly tied the game in the closing seconds as Eiscenschmid sent a slap shot past Mowat's left shoulder. Fortunately for Bemidji State it occurred after the clock struck zero to give BSU the win.
Goaltender Brittni Mowat made 31 saves to earn her fifth victory of the season to improve to 5-2-1 this season.
Notes on Bemidji State
- Brittni Mowat moved into a tie for fourth place on BSU's all-time wins list with her victory today. Mowat has 15 career wins which ties former Beaver net minder Jill Luebke. Next up on the wins list is Emily Brookshaw who notched 23 wins in her career.
- The win over North Dakota not only sealed the first sweep over North Dakota since 2007 but it also gave its third straight conference win. The last time BSU won three straight WCHA games came Feb. 11-18, 2012, when it defeated University of Minnesota Duluth once and St. Cloud State University twice.
- The last conference sweep for the Beavers over a WCHA opponent occurred Nov. 15-16, 2013 over Minnesota State University, Mankato.
- The Beavers improve to 20-33-4 all-time against UND with the pair of victories this weekend.
Next up: After a bye week, the Beavers will return to the ice Nov. 27-28 when it hosts Minnesota Duluth.
