COLUMBUS, Ohio - Behind a three-goal performance from junior Julia McKinnon, the Ohio State women's hockey team defeated Bemidji State, 5-1, Friday evening at the OSU Ice Rink.

McKinnon's hat trick - the first of her career - helped the Buckeyes (3-2-0, 1-2-0 WCHA) to a season-high five goals and snapped a two-game losing streak. Freshman Kassidy Sauve totaled 24 saves as the Scarlet and Gray handed the Beavers (4-1-0, 0-1-0 WCHA) their first loss of the season.

Bemidji opened scoring at 10:53 in the first period when Summer Thibodeau rebounded a shot from Ciscely Nelson and beat Sauve over her right shoulder. Ohio State fought back later in the first, with a goal from junior Kendall Curtis. Creating traffic in front of Bemidji State goalie Brittni Mowat, Buckeye freshman Lauren Spring and sophomore Claudia Kepler both created shots before Curtis rounded Kepler's attempt and converted. Evenly contested in the first stanza, the teams went into the dressing room tied, 1-1. Bemidji State held a slight 9-8 advantage in shots.

Ohio State took control of the game in the second period with a strong offensive performance. McKinnon put the Buckeyes ahead for good at 9:27, sending a shot over Mowat's left shoulder. Nearly two minutes later, the Buckeyes struck again. Curtis added her second tally of the game after another gritty play in front of the net, this time on a power play. For the period, Ohio State outshot Bemidji State 13-8, while Sauve shutout the Beavers with eight saves in goal.

Midway through the third period, McKinnon scored on a breakaway play off an outlet pass provided by redshirt senior Kara Gust. A native of Kelowna, British Columbia, McKinnon last notched a two-goal performance on Dec. 9, 2012 in a matchup with RIT. Still not finished for the evening, she scored for a third time by once again finding a spot over Mowat's shoulder.

For the game, Ohio State outshot the Beavers 30-25. The Buckeyes were strong on special teams, going 3-3 on penalty kills and 1-2 on power plays.

The teams return to the OSU Rink for game two tomorrow at 12:05 p.m. ET.
