ST. CHARLES, Mo. --- Freshman Emma Wittchow scored the game-winner with 8:25 remaining in final period as Minnesota State defeated Lindenwood University 3-2 on Friday night at Lindenwood Ice Arena.
The Mavericks have now won back-to-back games and improve to 2-16-1 overall on the season while the Lady Lions fall to 6-13-1.
Lindenwood was able to score the first two goals of the game, the first of which came 21 seconds into the game as Jordyn Constance took a shot from the top of the right circle and beat MSU netminder sophomore Brianna Quade to take a 1-0 lead. The Lady Lions second goal came on the power play at 2:06 of the second period as a shot from the blue line was deflected in by Constance.
Freshman Amanda Conway responded unassisted at 6:12 of the middle frame as her shot from the top of the left circle bounced underneath the pads of LU goaltender Nicole Hensley to cut the Lady Lions lead in half. The Mavericks tied up the score at two a piece on the power-play with just 11 seconds remaining in the second period. Freshman Nicole Schammel was able to keep the puck in the zone and deflect it out to fellow Freshman Hannah Davidson who wristed one in from the right dot for her fourth score of the season. Senior Kathleen Rogan was also credited with her first assist of the year on Davidson's goal.
In the final period, senior Natalie Stoltz chipped a pass out to Wittchow who fired one on net that found a way in for her first career goal for the Purple and Gold to bring the score to a final of 3-2.
Quade gets credited with the first win of her career for MSU after making 23 saves on the night.
The Mavericks and Lady Lions both went 1-3 on the power play while the Lady Lions held a slight edge on shots, 25-22.
Minnesota State and Lindenwood University will face off again tomorrow afternoon in the third and final game between the two teams this season. The puck is set to drop at 3 p.m.
