MANKATO, Minn. -- Led by a hat trick from junior forward Meghan Dufault, the University of North Dakota's women's hockey team opened WCHA play with a 5-0 win over Minnesota State on Friday night at All Seasons Arena.

Junior goaltender Shelby Amsley-Benzie picked up her sixth career shutout in net with a 15-save performance.

Dufault started the scoring for UND 12:38 into the game while on the power play. Josefine Jakobsen found Dufault at the back door and Dufault tapped it past Mavericks goaltender Erin Krichiver to give North Dakota a 1-0 lead. UND increased its lead just over a minute later when Gracen Hirschy got her stick on the puck in a scramble in front of Krichiver.

Halli Krzyzaniak put North Dakota up 3-0 less than three minutes into the second period, blasting a one-timer from the blue line, beating Krichiver high-glove for her first goal of the season. UND was held off the board the rest of the period, but kept up the pressure, pouring on 14 shots in the frame and only giving up three to Minnesota State.

After scoring her second of the night within the opening minutes of the third period, Dufault completed her third career hat trick with a shorthanded goal. Junior forward Becca Kohler sprung Dufault for a breakaway and she beat Krichiver again to give UND the five-goal lead.

Kohler picked up four assists in the contest, including helping on all three of Dufault's goals, while Jakobsen recorded two assists.

North Dakota's penalty kill was once again impressive in the win, killing off three Mavericks power plays. UND is 16-for-16 on the PK this season and Dufault's tally was the team's second shorthanded goal of the year.

With the win, North Dakota improves to 2-1-0 on the season (1-0-0 WCHA). Krichiver made 29 saves in the loss, while replacement Brianna Quade stopped all five shots she saw in 10:45 of action in relief.

UND faces the Mavericks tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. (CT) to close out the road series.
