The Bulldogs got off to their fastest start against Bemidji State University in the history of the program Friday night, but despite a flurried finish, the ending wasn't what the University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team had hoped for.
The No. 7 Beavers survived a Bulldog goal just 19 seconds into the opening period by scoring three unanswered goals of their own to pick up a 3-2 wins against the Bulldogs at AMSOIL Arena. The win brings BSU into a third-place tie with the University of North Dakota in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association with 34 points apiece.
"Good start, good finish, everything in between needs to be better," said head coach Maura Crowell. "I've been saying all season we need to play consistently for 60 minutes and if we give up some goals, you have to be able to respond, and it shouldn't take until the last five to 10 to get your gears going again."
UMD's start was impressive, with a goal from junior forward Lara Stalder just 19 seconds into play. Stalder buried a sneaky pass from her linemate Ashleigh Brykaliuk in the slot to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. The tally was the fastest goal by UMD squad against a Beaver team in program history.
BSU finally answered UMD's early wake-up call 1:12 into the second period, using a power play to get on the scoreboard. The Beavers Melissa Hunt pushed BSU into the lead two minutes later at the 3:12 mark, and after 40 minutes of action, UMD took a 2-1 deficit into the second intermission.
The Beavers doubled their lead on a power play a mere 29 seconds into the third period on Kristin Huber's second goal of the night. Trailing 3-1, UMD broke its three game scoreless power play streak when Stalder skated in from the left circle and blistered a shot past BSU net minder Brittni Mowat at 10:19. The Bulldogs peppered Mowat from there on out, even outshooting the Beavers 14-10 and attempting 29 shots to BSU's 13, but unfortunately time ran out on UMD's effort.
Bulldog senior goaltender Kayla Black made 31 saves in her first start of the new year, while Mowat made 26 for the Beavers, who were a perfect 2-of-2 with the extra skater.
UMD (9-15-1, 6-12-1) and BSU (16-7-2, 11-7-1) will close out the series tomorrow afternoon at AMSOIL. The puck is slated to drop at 4:07 p.m.
