BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- The No. 9 Bemidji State women's hockey team opened regular-season play with a 3-1 win against Robert Morris University Friday night. The Beavers (1-0-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) used two goals in the second period to overcome the Colonials (0-1-0, 0-0-0 CHA), 3-1.

Sophomore Alexis Joyce and Lauren Miller each registered a goal and an assist in the game, while Stephanie Anderson scored a goal and Ivana Bilic tallied an assist.

It was a slow start for the Beavers in the opening period as the teams skated to a 0-0 tie. BSU dominated puck possession and totaled 10 shots, while limiting RMU to just three, but couldn't find the back of the net.

Bemidji State came out for the start of the second period with new energy and 1:24 into the period, Joyce scored the game's opening goal. The Beavers would find the net again in the period as Anderson scored on the power play to give BSU a two-goal lead. Robert Morris would answer back, however, when Rikki Meilleur scored with 4:05 remaining. Bemidji State would eventually skate into the locker room with a 2-1 lead after the period.

The Beavers went on to control most of the third period after strong defensive play from their blue line and with less than a minute remaining, Miller added an empty-net goal to seal the 3-1 victory for BSU.

Bemidji State out-shot their opponent 35-19, and junior Brittni Mowat made 18 saves to earn her first win of the season.

BSU will look complete the sweep against Robert Morris tomorrow when they host the Colonials at 4:07 p.m.
