BURLINGTON, Vt. - The No. 9 Bemidji State University women's hockey team used a strong first period to earn a 2-1 win for its first win on the road this season. The Beavers (2-0-1, 0-0-0 WCHA) scored both goals in the first period, and out-shot the Catamounts (0-1-0, 0-0-0 CHA) 33-12 in the game.
Madison Hutchinson and Hanna Moher each recorded two-points in the game after Hutchinson scored the game-winning goal and Moher tallied two assists. Sophomore Emma Terres scored the first goal on the power play and senior Whitney Wivoda added an assist to close out the Beaver scoring.
The Beavers opened the scoring in the first period when Terres scored her first goal of the season while on the power play. BSU would add another goal late in the period after Hutchinson tallied her first goal of the season and the Beavers went into the locker room with a two-goal lead.
Bemidji State dominated most of the second period, limiting the Catamounts to just one shot with eight minutes remaining. However, UVM would score on their second shot after Bridget Baker tipped in a shot past goaltender Brittni Mowat to cut the Beavers lead in half. Both teams then skated the remaining period without a goal, even though the Beavers out-shot their opponent 11-3.
BSU came out in the third continuing its offensive pressure from the second and out-shot UVM 12-5, but Catamount's goaltender Madison Litchfield stopped every shot attempt. Bemidji State out-lasted a final push by Vermont with less than a minute remained after the Catamounts pulled Litchfield for the extra attacker. UVM produced three solid scoring chances, but Mowat remained strong in the net and sealed the 2-1 victory for the Beavers.
Bemidji State and Vermont will close out the two-game series when the face each other tomorrow at 3 p.m.
