BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University women's hockey team scored six goals en route to a 6-1 victory over Minnesota State University, Mankato Friday night. Sophomore Emily Bergland tallied three points (1g-2a) to lead the Beavers (11-17-3, 7-17-3 WCHA).
10 different Beavers tallied a point in the game including three from Bergland to increase her season total to 24 (15g-9a). Seniors Madison Hutchinson and Lauren Miller each tallied two points, two assists for Hutchinson and a goal and assist for Miller.
Ciscely Nelson, Haley Mack and Abby Halluska each had one goal while Alexis Joyce, Reilly Fawcett, Emma Terres and Melissa Hunt each tallied an assist.
Senior goaltender Brittni Mowat stopped 18-of-19 shots by the Mavericks including 11 in the first period to earn her 10th win of the season and improve to 10-16-3 this season.
Bemidji State opened the scoring in the game just 6:41 into the first period by transitioning defense into offense when Halluska blocked a shot from the point and skated for the partial breakaway and beat freshman goaltender Chloe Crosby with a shot from the right circle. Despite the score total, MSU dominated the shot chart and outshot the Beavers 11-6 in the first period.
The Beavers attacked during the second period and dictated play in the middle period. BSU outshot the Mavericks 18-2 in the period and were rewarded with a trio of goals late in the period. Bergland started off the scoring with her first tally of the night at 16:12 while on a BSU power play. Just two minutes later, Bergland scored again but this time the Beavers were shorthanded for their first shorthanded goal of the season. Freshman Haley Mack would add to the scoring run and with just 23 second remaining, stole the puck away from the Mavericks' defense and scored her third goal of the season.
Bemidji State would add onto its lead in the third period when Miller tallied her eighth goal of the season at 7:10 of the period. 2:29 later BSU would score its sixth goal of the game when Ciscely Nelson received a pass from Miller and tucked in a nice back-door goal for the 6-0 lead. Eyeing a record-tying 18th shutout, Mowat held the Mavericks scoreless late. However, with just 2:28 remaining, Minnesota State's Hannah Davidson found a loose puck in front of the crease and scored her fourth goal of the season while on a late power play. The Beavers would close out the remainder of the period and seal the 6-1 victory.
Bemidji State ended with a 36-19 advantage on the shot chart and went 2-for-3 on the power play with tallies from Bergland and Miller. BSU's penalty kill went 1-for-5 in the game while also scoring a short-handed goal.
Mowat will have another shot at tying the school record for shutouts in a career tomorrow night when the Beavers face the Mavericks again. Bemidji State honors six seniors for Senior Day before the game with a 3:07 p.m. puck drop.
