BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University women's hockey fell to No. 9/8 University of Minnesota in heartbreaking fashion after the Gophers scored the game-winning goal, 1:04 into overtime. The Beavers (1-4-1, 0-2-0 WCHA) fell 4-3 in the game despite overcoming two, one-goal deficits.
Summer Thibodeau, Mak Langei and Emma Terres all scored for the Beavers with Langei also recording an assist and freshman Clair DeGeorge recording two assists to lead BSU.
The Gophers out-shot the Beavers 26-23 in the game with winning goaltender, Sidney Peters making 20 saves for UM while redshirt freshman Lauren Bench made 22 stops.
Bemidji State would reach the board first when Thibodeau deflected a shot by Langie finding its way to the upper corner for a 1-0 lead 13:39 into the opening period. It looked as if the period would end with BSU holding the lead but Nicole Schammel scored with just three second remaining to even the score at 1-1.
Minnesota would then tally the next goal in the game 8:17 into the second period when Patti Marshall fired in a shot from the point, putting the Gophers up 2-1. The Beavers responded however, and at 15:38, Langei scored her first collegiate goal off of a one-timer from the right circle. However, the Gophers would again tally another goal late in the period when Caitlin Reilly scored on a two-on-one with just 12 seconds left for the 3-2 lead heading into the last intermission.
Bemidji State was able to tie the score 4:44 into the final period when Emma Terres found the puck on her stick in front of Peters and quickly fired it past her for her second tally of the season. The score would remain unchanged through the remainder of the period and just 1:04 into overtime, Minnesota won an offensive draw allowing senior defenseman Sydney Baldwin to fire a puck from the point eventually finding the back of the net for the game-winning goal.
The Beavers will have a tough test next weekend still looking for their first conference win of the season and will be on the road at No. 1 University of Wisconsin.
It would take 10 minutes for the Beavers to respond and with an extra attacker, Halluska sniped a shot past Peters for her first goal of the season to bring BSU within one. Bemidji State was unable to even the score over the next seven minutes, and with constant puck pressure, pulled Deters in favor of the extra attacker with 1:35 left to play. BSU fired-off for four shots on net but Peters and the Gopher defense remained strong and with three seconds remaining, Taylor Wente fired the puck from the opposite end for the empty-net goal.
Peters finished with 27 saves for the Gophers to improve to 1-1-1 on the season while Deters stopped 24-of-27 shots to fall to 0-2-1.
