BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University women's hockey team rallied from down three goals to score two unanswered goals in the second period of Friday's game between the Beavers and University of Minnesota Duluth. However, the Beavers (1-7-1, 0-5-0 WCHA) failed to score the crucial game-tying goal and fell to the Bulldogs (3-6-0, 1-4-0 WCHA), 3-2, in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play.
The Beavers out-shot the Bulldogs 45-22 but senior goaltender Jessica Convery stopped 43-of-45 shots to earn the win for UMD.
Junior Emily Bergland and sophomore Haley Mack tallied the lone Beaver goals for BSU in the second period while Reilly Fawcett, Abby Halluska and Mak Langei each added assists.
The Beavers controlled possession of the puck for the majority of the game but the Bulldogs took advantage of timely opportunities to gain an advantage over BSU. Minnesota Duluth scored first 10:43 into the first period when Jalyn Elmes found the back of the net. The Bulldogs would add another goal just as the period was about to end when Ashton Bell scored with just 16 second remaining.
Head coach Jim Scanlan made a goaltending switch to start the second period in hopes of firing his team up, however, with senior Erin Deters in net, UMD added another to its tally just 31 seconds into the second period off of a deflection by Naomi Rogge. The Beavers seemed to skate much faster and just three minutes later, Bergland scored her first goal of the season to put BSU on the scoreboard. BSU got its next goal while on the power play when Mack one-timed the puck for her third goal of the season at 10:29 of the middle frame.
Bemidji State came out in the third period applying pressure to the Bulldogs looking for the game-tying goal. BSU out-shot UMD 15-7 in the final frame but Convery of UMD remained dominant in net shutting out the Beavers in the third for her third victory of the season.
With the loss, the Beavers fall to 0-5-0 in conference play and will close out their series with Minnesota Duluth tomorrow at 3:07 p.m.
