Mankato, Minn. --- Senior defenseman Anna Keys scored the game-winning goal as Minnesota State women's hockey defeated Bemidji State 3-1 on Friday afternoon at Verizon Center.
Minnesota State (4-22-1, 2-17-0-0 WCHA) outshot Bemidji State (12-14-3, 7-10-2-1 WCHA) 16-7 in the first period, but neither team was able to score.
In the second period, the Mavericks outshot the Beavers 14-8 and outscored the Beavers 2-1. The Mavericks scored a power-play goal 46 seconds into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. Junior defenseman Megan Hinze rocketed a slap shot for her second goal of the season - the seventh power-play goal of her collegiate career. Keys and junior forward Corbin Boyd assisted on the play.
The Beavers answered back with a goal 10 second later - scored by Clair DeGeorge at 00:56.
The game would remain tied 1-1 until Keys scored her first goal of the season - on the power play - at 18:57. Stationed at the left side of the net, Keys stashed home a rebound for what turned out to be the game-winning goal. Boyd picked up her second assist of the game and freshman forward Brittyn Fleming tallied her team-leading 12th assist and 16th point on Keys' goal.
The Mavericks outshot the Beavers 11-9 in the third period and junior forward Jordan McLaughlin increased her team-leading goal total to seven with an empty-net goal at the 19:05 mark to make the final score 3-1. Keys assisted on the play for a three-point afternoon. McLaughlin has scored both empty net goals for the Mavericks this season - previously achieving the feat at Lindenwood on Sept. 29.
Sophomore goaltender Chloe Crosby (3-8-1) made 23 saves for the Mavericks, while Lauren Bench (7-7-0) stopped 38 shots for the Beavers.
Minnesota State finished 2-of-4 on the power play and had 10 shots on goal with the man advantage. The Minnesota State penalty kill successfully killed off two Bemidji State power plays.
The Mavericks held a 41-24 edge in shots on goal. The 41 shots are a season-high for the Mavericks.
Minnesota State and Bemidji State conclude their two-game WCHA series at 2:07 p.m., on Saturday at Verizon Center.
