BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University women's hockey team went two-for-four on the power play and scored a short-handed goal to defeat Rochester Institute of Technology, 5-2, Friday afternoon.
Sophomore Haley Mack and senior Alexis Joyce each posted two goals and an assist to lead the Beavers (7-10-2, 4-7-1 WCHA) while senior Emma Terres added a goal and assist.
BSU outshot the Tigers (4-13-2, 1-7-0 CHA) 60-21 in the game, posting their highest shot total of the season and tied for the second most in program history.
Bemidji State dominated play from start to finish and took just 3:41 into the opening period to score the game's first goal when Terres fired her sixth goal of the season while on a BSU power play. The Beavers would get their next goal short-handed when Mack stole the puck and the blueline and beat Terra Lanteigne on the breakaway for the 2-0 lead 11:21 in the first.
RIT scored first in the second period when Mallory Rushton batted in her own rebound while on a Tiger power play 1:47 into the middle frame. The Beavers responded with their second power play goal of the night and second goal of the night from Mack at 8:46. For Mack, it was her first career two-goal game and second career three-point night. BSU extended its lead later in the period when Joyce scored her first of the game and second of the season just five minutes later.
Bemidji State added another goal in the third period off the stick of Joyce for her second goal of the game and second two-goal game of her career at 6:24 of the period. However, RIT would tally the game's final goal when Kendall Cornine buried her team-leading sixth goal of the season at 11:01.
Redshirt freshman Lauren Bench stopped 19-of-21 shots by the Tigers to earn her third win of the season and improve to 3-4-0. Lanteigne finished with 55 saves on 60 shots including 22 saves in the second period and falls to 3-8-1 this season.
Bemidji State will try to sweep the Tigers tomorrow when the two teams battle for the series finale at 3:07 p.m.
