BEMIDJI, Minn. - BEMIDJI, Minn. - Mikaela Gardner scored 1:58 into overtime to give No. 1 University of Wisconsin a 4-3 victory over Bemidji State University and three points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings Friday night. The Beavers (12-13-2, 7-9-1 WCHA) overcame a two-goal deficit at the start of the third period to force overtime against the top-ranked Badgers (24-1-0, 15-0-0 WCHA).

Freshman Paige Beebe scored the game-tying goal with 3:01 remaining while junior Emily Bergland pulled the Beavers within one just 1:41 earlier.

Redshirt freshman Lauren Bench made 34-of-38 saves against the Badgers but falls to 7-6-0 on the season.

The Badgers struck first in the game by scoring with just 3:52 on the clock in the first period from Claudia Kepler's 15th goal of the season. Wisconsin would tally the second goal of the game 8:32 into the second when Caitlin Schneider batted in a loose puck in front of the net for her third of the season. Six minutes later the Badgers added a power-play goal when Kepler tipped in a shot from the point that found the top of the net for her second of the game to lead 3-0 with 5:23 remaining in the second.

That's when the Beavers would find their scoring touch. Just 1:14 after the Kepler's tally, sophomore Abby Halluska took a nice feed from Haley Mack and finished with a goal in close to sophomore netminder, Kristen Campbell. Bergland would pull the Beavers within one late in the third period at 15:18 after finding herself past the Badger defense off a nice blueline-to-blueline pass from Jacqueline Kaasa for her eighth of the season. Soon after, the Beavers would get the game-tying goal from Beebe just 1:41 later off of an assist from freshman Clair DeGeorge.

Neither team would be able to score within the last three minutes of the period and would held to overtime to determine a winner. Wisconsin held the puck in its end for most of the extra frame and outshot the Beavers 4-0. Gardner was able to find a loose puck off of a failed clear by Bemidji State and fired the overtime winner over the right shoulder of Bench to keep the Badgers undefeated in league play.

Campbell earned the win for the Badgers in net, stopping 29-of-32 shots by BSU and improves to 24-1-0 on the season.

The Beavers and Badgers play the series finale tomorrow afternoon with puck dropped scheduled for 3:07 p.m.
