DULUTH, Minn. - Emma Yanko picked the perfect afternoon to have the first two-goal game of her career.
The junior forward netted back-to-back goals for the University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team Saturday, helping the Bulldogs defeat Minnesota State University, Mankato 3-1 at AMSOIL Arena before 1,334 hockey fans. With the win, UMD secured the Western Collegiate Hockey Association sweep over the Mavericks and the all important six league points.
"As I always say, a sweep in this league is hard to come by, and this is our second one in a row at AMSOIL,' said head coach Maura Crowell. "We finish here (at AMSOIL) 6-2 for the semester, which is nice, because we need these points and these are teams we have to beat, so it's good to walk away with six points."
The Mavericks kicked off the scoring when they took advantage of a 2-on-1 that led to a goal by Jordan McLaughlin at 2:21 of the first period. UMD responded late in the stanza, on a blast from the point by senior Katrina Mrázová that knuckled over Katie Bidulka and under the crossbar for Mrázová's second goal of the year.
Yanko put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1 1:48 into the second period, funneling down the slot and shoveling home a slide pass from Mrázová. Yanko struck again for UMD at the 15:29 mark, scoring off a rebound from a Catherine Daoust shot. Yanko corralled Daoust's rebound and turned in one motion to wrist it by Bidulka to put UMD up 3-1.
MSU battled back late in the third period, and a goal by Sofia Poinar goal with 39.7 seconds left cut the Mavericks deficit to just a single goal. Despite outshooting UMD 11-8 in the third stanza and 28-27 in the game, MSU couldn't topple the Bulldogs, who earned their third sweep of the season and second in three weeks over a WCHA team.
Jessica Convery had 26 saves for UMD, while Bidulka made 24 for MSU. With the setback, the Mavericks fall to 2-11-1 overall and 1-9-0 in the WCHA.
The Bulldogs - who at 7-8-0 overall and 5-5-0 in league play are in fourth place - got some breathing room from Bemidji State University over the weekend. With 15 league points, UMD is now ahead of the Beavers who own 11.
UMD will jump back out of conference play and head out east next weekend. The Bulldogs will face No. 3 Colgate University in the Windjammer Classic at the University of Vermont. Game-time is set for 4:00 p.m. ET.
