COLUMBUS, Ohio - Four different Buckeyes scored as the No. 7 Ohio State University women's ice hockey team finished off a sweep of the No. 5 University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs with a 4-3 win at the OSU Ice Rink on Saturday.
The Buckeyes (5-0-1, 3-0-1 WCHA) drew first blood with an Emma Maltais goal just over four minutes into the game. The freshman, and reigning Western Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week, scored her third goal of the year off a pass from line mate Charly Dahlquist, giving OSU an early 1-0 lead. Just a minute passed before the Bulldogs responded with a goal of their own from Sydney Brodt to tie the game. Naomi Rogge gave UMD its first lead of the weekend at the 8:07 point of the first when she scored on a power play, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead they would carry into the second period.
Minnesota Duluth (2-4-0, 0-2-0 WCHA) got two more power play chances early in the second, but could not capitalize on them, leaving the door open for Julianna Iafallo to tie the game in the seventh minute of the period. The senior's third goal in as many games made it 2-2, but that would not last for long. After assisting on the Iafallo goal, Maddy Field netted one of her own to put the Buckeyes back in front, 3-2. Goaltender Kassidy Sauvé picked up her first assist of the season on the Field goal, which gave OSU the lead going into the second intermission.
Just over a minute into the third, Jacyn Reeves took a loose puck from the blue line and deposited it into the back of the net, giving the Buckeyes a 4-2 lead. After pulling their goalie with just under two minutes to play, Rogge scored her second goal of the game to cut the OSU lead in half with only 32 seconds to play. A flurry from the Bulldogs followed the faceoff, but Sauvé withstood the onslaught as the Buckeyes emerged victorious, winning 4-3.
"It's great to have such balance and depth on the offensive side of the puck," OSU Head Coach Nadine Muzerall said. "We know that on any given night any of our players can step up and make the difference, and that gives us the freedom to play how we want. We were able to press and dominate the shots until late in the game when UMD grew desperate, and if we can keep doing that, we can skate with anyone."
Sauvé followed last night's 35 save shutout with a 31 save performance that saw her lock down the Bulldogs after their first period goals for the next 51:11 of game time, until UMD scored with the extra attacker with only 32 second to play.
The Buckeyes hit the road next weekend for a WCHA series at St. Cloud State. The series gets underway at 4:07 p.m. ET on Friday.
